Rockville keeps rolling
A roundup of other games in Montgomery County Friday
Rockville junior running back Crusoe Gongbay appears fully recovered from a nagging ankle injury. He rushed for 235 yards and 4 touchdowns to give the Rams football team their fifth straight victory to open the fall, 35-0 over local rival Richard Montgomery.
After being slowed in a victory over Northwood and missing a week four win over Crossland, Gongbay racked up his third 100-yard game of the season, while quarterback Chris Brown sneaked in from a yard out for one more Rockville score. The Rams (5-0) led 14-0 after a quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
"We're really pleased with the defense, especially," said first-year Rockville head coach Kevin Bernot. "This was a great win for us because it was a home game, these guys all know each other and played with each other, and it was really classy. We had a good showing."
The Rockets are now 0-5.
Seneca Valley 41, Kennedy 20
Seneca Valley rushed to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to its third straight win after an 0-2 start to the season. Junior quarterback Max Nicholson threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns; Kyle Coleman and Trey Cunningham each caught a touchdown pass.
Dionte Joppy scored twice. Kyle Coleman, Pierre Hinton added touchdowns.
Kennedy quarterback Peter Ngoh threw for 37 yards and a touchdown and scored two touchdowns on the ground.
Quince Orchard 42, Northwood 12
Ben Sasu rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns, while fellow tailback Jason Bishop rushed for 79 yards and a score on a game high 18 carries. Backup quarterback Billy Plante started and finished 3 of 8 for 35 yards and two touchdowns. Wideouts Pernell Brantley and Karim Jones each hauled in a score.
"Scoreboard-wise it was good," said Cougar head coach Dave Mencarini. "But we didn't play well. We turned the ball over and [stuff]. Got a big one next week though."
The undefeated Cougars travel to unbeaten Clarksburg in a crucial 3A West Region matchup.
Whitman 34, Blair 12
Leading 14-6 at halftime, sixth-ranked Whitman exploded for three touchdowns in the third quarter to push past Blair.
Blazers assistant coach Adrian Kelly said Blair (1-4) racked up nearly 150 yards in penalties. Quarterbacks Elisee Francios and Alex Egber scored Blair's two touchdowns. Francois, the team's backup, rushed for 77 yards on seven carries against Whitman's second-string defense.
Fairmont Heights 28, Wheaton 22 (OT)
Despite 161 yards rushing and three touchdowns from halfback Rayshawn Taylor, the Knights failed to put the game away late. Taylor's 31-yard touchdown gave Wheaton (2-3) a temporary seven-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Fairmont Heights scored moments later to send the game to overtime.
The Knights then failed to capitalize on their overtime possession, while the Hornets punched in the game-ending touchdown. Taylor accounted for every Wheaton point, also rushing for two 2-point conversions.
