A raccoon found in the 100 block of Sunny Brook Terrace in Gaithersburg at 1:30 p.m. Thursday tested positive for rabies.

It’s the third reported rabid animal this year in Gaithersburg. A bat was found June 13 and a raccoon found June 27.

No human or animal contact was reported, and there is no indication the three cases are linked, said Lisa Holland, Gaithersburg’s director of animal control.

Two young adult residents of the neighborhood spotted the limping raccoon, which was acting lethargic and disoriented, Holland said.

Anyone who has come into direct contact with a raccoon in the last two weeks should call the Montgomery County Health Department at 240-777-1755.

If a pet has come into contact with a raccoon, call Gaithersburg Animal Control at 301-258-6343.
