Starting in 2009, people hunting for treasure may be head to Thurmont with their heads down, studying hand-held global positioning system devices.

The Maryland Municipal League Geocache Trail now includes the Town of Thurmont. Only 12 other Maryland municipalities have joined the trail.They include Centreville, Charlestown, Cottage City, Denton, Greenbelt, Leonardtown, Luke, Middletown, Millington, Mountain Lake Park, Somerset and Sykesville.

A press release from the Maryland Municipal League says that "the purpose of the [trail] is to promote awareness of and visits to Maryland's cities and towns. It taps into the rapidly growing high-tech tourist trade that is not limited to any particular age group."
