Trash/recycling
Most who live inside the Beltway have trash picked up by the county weekly. People who live in municipalities have trash collected by local governments or private contractors. People who live in the upcounty area must arrange their own collections through homeowners associations.

Recycling
The Montgomery Division of Solid Waste Services provides blue bins to collect glass jars and bottles, aluminum cans and foil products, plastic bottles and bundled mixed paper. Curbside pick-up is once a week, and must be set out by 7 a.m. The county also recycles other items such as computers, motor oil, scrap metal, tires, appliances and phone books. The items can be dropped off in person at the county's public transfer station, 16101 Frederick Road in Derwood.

Pets or pests?
Call the Montgomery County Animal Shelter at 240-773-5960 or 240-773-5925. Recorded information is available at 240-773-5054. The humane society will pick up sick or injured animals, confine stray dogs and cats, give rabies shots and register animal bites.
