Volunteers needed to help with Riverdale Park Day
Volunteers are needed to help plan and run the upcoming Riverdale Park Day.
The next meeting will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Sept. 28 at town hall, located at 5008 Queensbury Road.
Riverdale Park Day will be held from noon to 5 p.m., Oct. 3 on the grounds of Riversdale Mansion. Call Raymond Rivas at 301-625-9435.
Officials are graduates
of local government program
Local elected officials and municipal employees graduated Sept. 13 from the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance at the University of Maryland, College Park. The academy is meant to enhance the skills of elected officials so they can better serve their communities.
From Bladensburg, Mayor Walter James, Jr. and Councilman Cris Mendoza (Ward 1) participated. Hyattsville's city administrator Elaine Murphy, North Brentwood Mayor Petrella Robinson and Cottage City Commissioner Phyllis Robinson (Ward 3) also graduated.
The program is run through the Local Government Insurance Trust, Maryland Association of Counties, Maryland Municipal League, and the University of Maryland's Institute for Governmental Service and Research. The local officials were among 92 graduates.
Daughter of Hyattsville resident graduates basic training
Jessica L. Bulluck recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Hyattsville resident Anglia Bulluck and Silver Spring resident Arthur Bulluck.
Jessica Bulluck spent eight weeks in the program, which included physical fitness, basic warfare and military discipline training. She also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
She is a 2004 graduate of High Point High School and in 2007 received an associate degree from the TESST College of Technology.
Brentwood resident
recognized at Hood College
Brentwood resident Casey Lynn Kohnhorst was honored recently at a convocation ceremony at Hood College in Frederick. Students who qualify for convocation honors are either sophomores, juniors or seniors, have at least a 3.6 grade point average, have taken at least 12 credit hours on a regular basis and have no incomplete grades.
DeMatha alum
enters basic training
Joseph V. Collura, a 2008 graduate from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, recently entered Basic Cadet Training with the U.S. Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Collura must complete the six-week orientation program before entering his freshman year at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is the son of Elkridge residents Joseph and Kelly Collura.

Girl Scouts travel to England
On July 24, Girl Scouts from six troops in Prince George's County visited the birthplace of Diana, Princess of Wales in Northampton, England.
Twenty-four teen Girl Scouts and eight adults on the trip represented the following communities: Bowie, Camp Springs, Capitol Heights, Cheltenham, Clinton, Greenbelt, Hyattsville, Landover, Largo, Springdale, Upper Marlboro and Waldorf.
The Scouts, their leaders and parents spent an afternoon at the Althorp Estate, where they had a traditional afternoon tea; met Diana's brother, Charles Spencer; visited the "Diana: A Celebration" exhibition, which depicts Diana's life and work; saw the wedding dress Diana wore when she married Prince Charles; read Diana's childhood letters and school reports and learned about her charity work.
The girls concluded their tour with a first-time Girl Scout ceremony at Diana's burial site, Round Oval Lake.
The Althorp Estate tour was one of several sites the girls visited on a nine-day European tour that was sponsored by Educational Tours.
College holds
workshops on budgeting
Prince George's Community College will conduct a forum entitled, "Money Management: How to Keep Your Cash," from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in conference room two of the college's Largo Student Center.
The forum is meant to help people improve personal budgeting skills. Staff members from the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union will address financial planning and decision making skills at the forum.

Mount Rainier offers
free outdoor movies
The City of Mount Rainier is continuing its Free Flick program of family-friendly movies through October.
The movies are shown outdoors on a large screen. Popcorn is free. Movies begin at 8 p.m. at the intersection of 33rd and Perry streets.
"Spiderman" will be shown Sept. 25, and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" will be shown Oct. 9.
Hospital celebrates
new imaging equipment
Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 10 to unveil its picture archiving and computer system. The system, also known as PACS, will be used to streamline the production of digital imaging of X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans and eliminate the need for X-ray film.

The Unity in the Community fall conference, "Disaster Response & Emergency Preparedness Training Program," will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Oakcrest Community Center at 5200 Marlboro Pike in Capitol Heights.
The conference focuses on being prepared in the event of a disaster or public health emergency. Refreshments will be served.
