Obama to attend health care reform rally in College Park
Event scheduled for Thursday at Comcast Center
In a schedule released Friday by the White House, Obama was listed to make an appearance at the university's Comcast Center between noon and 1 p.m. White House and university officials confirmed the event but were unable to provide additional information.
"It's still evolving," said Millree Williams, a spokesman for the university, who said campus officials were contacted about the event late Friday.
The event is free and open to the public, Williams said, but warned that visitors should expect to wait to get into the 17,000-seat arena. Further details are expected to be posted on the university Web site later today.
"My advice would be to get here as early as possible," he said. "Be prepared to stand in line."
The visit would be Obama's first to Prince George's County since his inauguration in January. He last appeared at the university for a campaign rally just before the presidential primary election in February 2008.
Support for Obama was widespread in Prince George's County in the last election, where he took nearly 89 percent of the vote in the highest turnout in county history.
The rally for health care reform comes as Republicans are raising significant opposition to Obama's initiative to provide new insurance coverage to uninsured patients, citing high costs and concerns that it may edge out private providers.
With Congress back in session, Obama has pushed for lawmakers to adopt a bill for his approval.
