Prep soccer: Queen Anne teams split pair
Boys take loss, but girls come from behind to win
The Queen Anne School boys' soccer team has dropped its first two games this season, but the young squad showed signs of improvement Thursday during a 4-0 loss to Grace Brethren-Waldorf.
Sophomore forward Steven Brown shot a ball just wide with 22 seconds remaining that nearly gave Queen Anne its first goal of the season. Just under four minutes into the half, junior forward Larry Haley faked a Grace Brethren defender off his feet, then rocketed a high shot that beat the goalie. But the ball ricocheted off the top of the crossbar. Junior Dean Bolt and sophomore Deandre Smith also had good scoring chances in the first half, as did Haley again off a touch-and-go play with freshman Simon Pompey.
Grace Brethren (2-2-1) was more experienced and had far more opportunities. But it was still a step forward for the Lions, who were 10-0 losers to Takoma Academy on Monday in their season opener.
"I think we were fortunate to only be down, 1-0, at the half because they had some chances that they didn't put away," said Queen Anne coach Patrick Noel. "But it was a tremendous improvement for us. We did a good job of creating opportunities and deserved a goal."
After Haley's shot hit the crossbar, Grace Brethren responded by scoring its three final goals over the next six minutes to put the game away. But Noel was optimistic after the final whistle.
"We probably had four guys out there playing in their second high school soccer game and a couple of those are still learning about offsides and how to throw in the ball," said Noel.
Queen Anne travels to Riverdale Baptist at 4 p.m. Monday.
Queen Anne girls victorious
Trailing 1-0 at halftime on Thursday against Hebrew Academy, the Queen Anne girls' soccer team took control in the second half. The Lions earned a 2-1 victory, getting second-half goals from Jasmine Johnson and Danielle Flynn. Flynn's goal came on an assist from Anna Pietras, as the Lions improved to 2-0. Goalkeeper Ashley Brown made several key saves in the second half en route to the victory. Queen Anne returns to action Monday against Riverdale Baptist.
