Area bike co-op hosts Life after Labor Day' event
The Mount Rainier Bike Co-op is hosting a "Life After Labor Day" event from 1 to 8 p.m., Saturday, with a party, potluck dinner and silent auction from 5 to 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the silent auction, such as bike tools, bike clothing or shoes, biking books, pool passes, gift certificates or gift baskets.
Proceeds from the event benefit the co-op as it tries to raise $5,000 for a new storage barn.
The event is being held in collaboration with Community Forklift and the Prince George's Community Pool.

named to dean's list
A number of local residents were named to the dean's list of University of Maryland, Eastern Shore for their academic accomplishments during the 2008-2009 school year.
Leandro Pavon of Brentwood, who is majoring in applied design, earned a 4.0 grade point average during the fall semester.
Hyattsville residents named to the dean's list are: accounting major Cyril Aikins, with a 3.8 fall semester GPA; criminal justice major Charlotte Hughes, with a 3.6 spring semester GPA; mathematics major Susan Lyons, with a 3.8 fall semester GPA and 3.6 spring semester GPA; hotel and restaurant management major Haider Mahmood with a 3.7 fall semester GPA; and English major Marla Stewart with a 4.0 spring semester GPA.
Riverdale residents named to the dean's list are English education major Lorien Crawley, who earned a 3.7 spring semester GPA and biology major Ogochukwu Onyima, who earned a 3.8 fall semester GPA.
Mount Rainier offers free outdoor movies through October
The City of Mount Rainier is continuing its Free Flick program of family-friendly movies through October.
The movies are shown outdoors on a large screen. Popcorn is free.
Movies begin at 8 p.m. at the intersection of 33rd and Perry streets.
"North by Northwest" will show Friday, "Spiderman" will be shown Sept. 25," and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" will be shown Oct. 9.
Seminar on healthy living
for seniors scheduled
Prince George's County Councilman Will Campos (D-Dist. 2) of Hyattsville and delegates Justin Ross (D-Dist. 22) of Greenbelt and Victor Ramirez (D-Dist. 47) of Cheverly will host a healthy living seminar for senior citizens from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Rollingcrest-Chillum Community Center at 6120 Sargent Road.
Speakers from the county's health department, Department of Family Services and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will discuss healthy nutrition, physical fitness, emotional health and substance abuse.

College slates workshops
on financial aid, budgeting
Prince George's Community College will conduct a federal student aid workshop, "Financial Aid Basics: Facts and Myths about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid," from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in room 133, Bladen Hall, at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
In addition, a forum entitled, "Money Management: How to Keep Your Cash" will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in conference room two of the college's Largo Student Center.
The forum is meant to help people improve personal budgeting skills. Staff members from the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union will address financial planning and decision making skills at the forum.

Electronic recycling
in Mount Rainier
The city of Mount Rainier is hosting an electronic recycling program for residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 19.
Recyclable electronics include: keyboards, laptop computers, fax machines, telephone systems, printers, computer speakers, copiers, scanners, surge protectors, pagers, cell phones, circuit boards, CD players, radios, stereos, VCRs, televisions, ink jet and toner cartridges and any individual computer component parts. Unacceptable items include software, stereo speakers, boxes and home appliances such as toasters and microwave ovens.
Residents must show proof of residency and each household is limited to recycling six items. Residents can drop off the electronics at the Department of Public Works, at 3715 Wells Ave.
Hyattsville couple collecting donations for wounded veterans
A Hyattsville couple, Milton and Linda McGehee, and area churches are collecting donations for a special Christmas delivery to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
The gift baskets will be taken to the wards for amputees, physical therapy and registration, where they will be distributed to children who are visiting relatives being treated at the hospital.
Residents can drop off donations of shaving cream, razors, disposable cameras, toothbrushes, deodorant and other items at the First Baptist Church of Hyattsville, 5701 42nd Ave.; the Trinity Baptist Church, 1900 Beechwood Road; or First United Methodist Church, 6201 Belcrest Road.

September community market dates set in Cheverly
The Cheverly Community Market will run from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sept. 26 at the Cheverly Community Center at 6401 Forest Road.
The Cheverly Master Gardeners will hold a plant clinic at the Sept. 12 market.

Music and drawing classes
at the Old Parish House
The Old Parish House in College Park will offer weekly music and drawing classes starting Monday night.
Eric Maring, also known as "Mr. M," will host the "Sing to the Heart" music class for children ages 4 and under. The class will have two 45-minute sessions each Monday — starting at 4:45 and 5:45 p.m. — and will run for eight consecutive weeks. The registration fee is $100 per child and siblings receives a 10 percent discount.
Lucy Dirksen will host the drawing class from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays for 10 straight weeks. Class size is limited to 10 children ages 8 and older. The registration fee is $75 per child and $60 for siblings.
