County police chief offers help for speeding problems in Brookeville
The county police chief has told Brookeville town officials that he concurs with their concerns about traffic safety issues in the community, including excessive speeding.
Town Commission President Michael Acierno reported Monday that he received a letter from Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger, at the request of County Council President Michael J. Knapp (D-Dist. 2) of Germantown, in response to concerns raised by commissioners and residents at a recent town meeting.
A review of the site showed that it was not conducive to speed enforcement cameras, but Manger offered to provide portable speed signs and increased enforcement in the area.
There are also plans to install marked crosswalks and signs to make it safer for pedestrians.
Looking for ways
to go greener
The Town of Brookeville continues its quest to go green.
Resident Fred Teal presented his findings on purchasing wind energy and renewable energy certificates to the commissioners at their meeting on Monday evening.
The alternative energy sources would cost the town slightly more, but could reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 18 tons annually. No decision was made.
The commissioners will continue to investigate ways to save energy. They plan to work with Pepco to see if more efficient bulbs can be used in the streetlamps and to replace some faulty sensors that cause some lights to remain on all day.
Commission President Michael Acierno plans to arrange guest speakers to visit the town to provide educational talks on energy-related issues.
"There is obviously interest among the towns residents to learn what they can do on a smaller scale to save energy," he said.
Heat is on the way
The Brookeville Academy should have heat before the cold season begins.
Commissioners and business manager Andrea Scanlon will soon make a selection from several proposals to replace the existing furnace. Once the final selection is made, the installation should be completed in about five weeks.
The existing furnace broke last year, preventing the town from renting the building during the winter months. The commissioners considered replacing it with a geo-thermal unit, which ultimately proved to be too costly.
Academy fees
to increase slightly
The commissioners on Monday approved a modest increase in rental rates for the Brookeville Academy.
Discounted rates are available for non-profit organizations, civic groups and Town of Brookeville residents. For more information, call business manager Andrea Scanlon at 301-570-4465 or send an e-mail to brookeville
