Landover conference to aid homeowner associations
Del. Aisha Braveboy (D-Dist. 25) of Mitchellville and County Executive Jack B. Johnson (D) are playing host to the "Associations Thriving in Today's Economy" conference from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover.

Capitol Heights church plans Sept. 11 tribute
The New Life Worship Center is scheduled to hold "A Walk to Remember" tribute to victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at 9 a.m. Saturday starting at the church, 7230 Central Ave. There will be a fundraiser walk through the Capitol Heights' Peppermill Village community that ends at the church following a ceremony from the Central High School color guard and drill team. Parade and food scheduled for New Carrollton Community Day
The annual New Carrollton Community Day is scheduled for Saturday, starting off with a community parade expected to form at 8 a.m. at Margaret Brent Regional School at 5816 Lamont Terrace and march at 9 a.m. toward Beckett Field, the site of the community day, at 8511 Legation Road. There will also be a memorial service for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center towers in New York City.
Glenarden community event to feature food, music, fellowship
The second annual Glenarden Family and Friends Day is scheduled for noon to dusk Saturday at the site of the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Building at Piedmont Avenue in Glenarden. The event honors Suitland Football Coach Nick Lynch, who died in a car accident in December. There will be food and music performances from DJ Hypnotic and the Mission Band. Seat Pleasant residents graduate greening' classes
The following Seat Pleasant residents graduated Aug. 24 from "Greening The Community," a program run through the Seat Pleasant Community Development Corp. that allows residents to take classes at Largo's Prince George's Community College in energy weatherization and receive on-the-job training to gain future employment: Kevin R. The classes were made possible through partnerships with Bowie-based Renewable Energy Alliance, the SPCDC and the PGCC Center for Business and Industry Training.

Nonprofit marks anniversary with cookout, service

Sorority sponsors college tours
The Prince George's County Alumnae Chapter of the Capitol Heights-based Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is sponsoring a college tour of Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va., and Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va., for Prince George's County seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders Oct. 15.
The tour offers students the opportunity to see the campuses, talk to admissions officers and students and learn about scholarships and when to apply for admission. The cost is $25 and includes bus transportation, breakfast, campus tours and lunch.
The 50 seats are limited to Prince George's County residents.
The sorority is also sponsoring a tour of historically black colleges and universities Oct. 31 to Nov. 5.
The tour is open to all high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with a 2.0 grade-point average. The cost is $500 per person, which includes round-trip transportation on a motor coach, hotel lodging and 12 meals. A deposit of $250 is due by Sept. 30.
Students will visit Hampton University in Hampton, Va., Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., North Caroline Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C., Claflin University and South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C., and Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College in Atlanta, among other schools.

to college's president's list
Nicole Andolino of Largo was named to the president's list at Lim College in New York, N.Y. for the spring 2010 semester.
To be named to the president's list, students must earn a grade-point average between 3.8 and 3.99.

Walk-a-thon in Glenn Dale
Through The Smile Train, a New York City-based nonprofit organization that works to provide free cleft surgery for poor children in developing countries and to provide free cleft-related training for doctors and medical professionals, the Upper Marlboro-based nonprofit organization Frown 2 Smiles Inc. is hosting their annual "Walk-a-Smile" at 9 a.m. Sept. 25 at the Washington Baltimore and Annapolis Trail at the Glenn Dale Community Center at 11901 Glenn Dale Blvd. in Glenn Dale.
This year's nearly five-mile walk is dedicated to Renee M. Henry of Jessup, a dental hygienist in Bowie, who died in March 2008.
Henry lived in Kettering for 36 years, said Tamekia Davis of Upper Marlboro, the event organizer and the organization's owner and founder, who decided to stage the event to honor Henry.
A participant and sponsor registration begins at 7 a.m. that morning. Registration is $25. All participants will receive an event goodie bag. Those who raise $100 or more will receive a t-shirt.
After the event, there will be a reception with food and entertainment. Prizes will be given for the most pledges raised, first to cross the finish line and the largest participating group. The event is rain or shine.

Largo college hosts annual Bluebird Blues Festival
Prince George's Community College in Largo is hosting the 18th annual Bluebird Blues Festival from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at the college at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
Clarence Carter, the event's headliner, will perform on the main stage in front of the Novak Field House.

Chiari I malformation is a congenital malformation that causes blockage of spinal fluid to the spinal canal and results in headache, dizziness, blurred vision and other neurological symptoms
