Frederick school board candidate arrested for violating protective order
Dexter would not leave his Jefferson home after domestic dispute, court documents read
A Jefferson man running for the Frederick County Board of Education was arrested Friday and charged with violating a protective order his wife placed against him and resisting arrest, according to Frederick County District Court documents.
Glenn E. Dexter Sr., 71, allegedly choked his wife and pushed her in an unspecified domestic dispute, his wife wrote in her petition for the protective order filed Friday in Frederick County District Court.
Online court records also show that Dexter is facing a second-degree assault charge, but the documents that detail that charge were not available to the public by The Gazette's deadline Wednesday.
Deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office went to the Dexters' home Friday night to serve the protective order.
Court documents gave the following account of the incident: Dexter met the deputies at the door, where they told him he was being served with the order. He let them into the house and requested to finish a phone call.
He led the deputies to an upstairs office, where he sat down and completed the call. Afterwards, the deputies informed him of the protective order and told him he needed to vacate the home at least until after a final protective order hearing was held. It is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 10 in the Frederick County Courthouse.
Dexter asked where he should go upon leaving the home, and the deputies suggested he stay with family or friends or at a hotel. Dexter said he didn't have the money for a hotel. After given a few minutes to think of a course of action, Dexter told the deputies that he would not leave the residence.
The deputies told him that he had to leave or else be arrested. Dexter responded by telling the deputies to take him to jail, at which point they told him to stand up because he was under arrest.
Dexter shouted in protest and pinned his arms to his body. The deputies pulled him out of the chair by his arms. Dexter allegedly continued to resist while one of the deputies told him to put his hands behind his back. The deputies were eventually able to force his hands behind his back and handcuff him.
He was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital for an evaluation before being taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for processing.
He was released from the detention center on personal recognizance on Saturday, according to the Frederick County State's Attorney's Office.
The phone number at Dexter's home has been disconnected, and court documents do not yet list a lawyer for him.
