Former Mafia boss makes the Weinberg an offer it can't refuse
Michael Franzese, "one of the biggest money earners the Mob had seen since Al Capone" according to Vanity Fair and Fortune Magazines, will make a special appearance in Frederick and hold a youth and young adult dialogue from 2-3:30 p.m. on Saturday at The Weinberg Center for the Arts, 20 W. Patrick St., Frederick.
Ranked number five just behind John Gotti, Franzese was powerful, wealthy and influential. Yet in 1987 he did the unthinkable, unexpected and unbelievable when he quit the Mob to follow Jesus Christ.
Franzese will also speak at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the site of the church's future expansion just off Mount Zion and Elmer Derr Road, and again at 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m., and 11 a.m. Sunday morning at the church, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick.
"Michael is literally a man with a past and now a man on a mission," said Paul Mundey, Senior Pastor, in a press release. "His personal story is dramatic and compelling and he's determined to use the experiences of his former life for the benefit of at-risk youth, professional and student athletes, corporate executives and for anyone seeking the inspiration to beat the odds and make positive changes in their lives. Our congregation welcomed Michael two years ago and we're delighted that he's returned to Frederick Church of the Brethren and to Frederick for this community dialogue with youth and young adults."
Franzese has become a highly regarded motivator and a source of invaluable information. He has survived dozens of grand jury appearances, three major racketeering indictments, five criminal trials, and seven years in prison and a Mafia death sentence. He engaged bankers, corporate executives, union officials and professional and student athletes in a wide variety of financial scams.
"His personal experiences in organized crime and now his powerful anti-crime messages provide an eye-opening revelation for all who hear his testimony of faith versus fear," said Mundey in a press release. "We are confident that all who hear Michael, regardless of their station in life, will come away inspired and genuinely encouraged by how God can transform their lives during anxious, fearful times."
