Laytonsville Elementary School acting principal appointed 10 days before school year begins
Acting administrator appointed less than two weeks before classes began
Donna Sagona has come full circle as the new principal of Laytonsville Elementary School.
"Twenty five years ago, I said Yes' to my husband, and it was the best decision I ever made," Sagona said. "Twenty five years later, I'm back in the neighborhood and it's the best decision I've ever made again."
With her children grown and living in a new home, Sagona is happiest during the school day when she is with students.
"What I wanted for my children at home is what I want for my 470 Bulldogs now," Sagona said, in a reference to the Laytonsville team mascot. "I don't go to work every day, I go to a place I love. It's like coming to see your family every day."
The bond between Sagona and the school community developed quickly. She was named as acting principal for this school year on Aug. 20, just one business day before teachers returned and 10 days before the school's 469 students returned from summer break.
Former principal Hilarie Rooney announced her retirement to Florida on Aug. 8, said Adrian B. Talley, community superintendent.
In short order, Sagona was called in to replace Rooney and Kim Rogers was named as the school's new assistant principal.
Sagona is one of a number of acting principals throughout the county this year, Talley said. Sean P. McGee, former assistant principal at Laytonsville, is another; he was appointed to Damascus Elementary for this school year.
The Montgomery County Board of Education will appoint a permanent principal in the spring, Talley said. The process for choosing that person Sagona or another candidate through an open search will include opportunities for parent input, Talley said. A series of meetings will start during the school year.
For now, everyone is very comfortable, Talley said.
"I received an e-mail from a parent saying how great things are," Talley said. "I think they are very pleased with how Mrs. Sagona has come into the school."
Twila Taylor, co-president of the school's PTA, said some parents were stressed by the abrupt announcement of an acting principal for the school year, but "there is a sigh of relief here now; she will do a great job."
Sagona completed her principal internship at Great Seneca Creek Elementary School in Germantown. She has 22 years of teaching experience with Montgomery County and 11 years outside the system. This is her first principal position.
Sagona's main priority now is building relationships with teachers and students.
"We've built a really strong team just by jumping in and focusing on work. I feel like I've known them for years," Sagona said. "It's been whirlwind, but a fun one."
