Students refurbish computers to donate to charity
Students from the Montgomery County Students Information Technology Foundation Inc. at Thomas Edison High School of Technology in Wheaton will donate a complete computer lab consisting of six computers with operating systems, monitors, keyboards, mice and a printer, to a nonprofit charitable organization in Montgomery County.
The project provides an opportunity for the ITF students to practice their skills refurbishing computers while earning community service hours and developing an appreciation for the concepts of charity and community involvement.
"They are very proud to be a part of the process. It is exactly what the state wants to see in terms of student service hours," said John Brewer, Information Technology Foundation specialist.
Students have been preparing computers for donation to charities since 2006. They refurbish the computers as part of their curriculum and sell them to the public three times a year. Proceeds from the sales are used for students' industry standards IT certification tests, Brewer said.
Interested nonprofits must complete the application, which may be obtained by contacting Judyn Rengers at the Foundations Office at 301-929-2197, Judyn_a_rengers@mcpsmd.org or at www.itfcareers.org.
Deadline for applications is Oct. 1. A presentation ceremony will be held in the fall.
