In other Friday night football action …
Good Counsel 42, Dunbar (D.C.) 12
Senior fullback Jelani Jenkins rushed for four touchdowns and senior tailback Caleb Porzel added 113 rushing yards and a score to power the Good Counsel football team to a 42-12 season-opening victory against host Dunbar in Washington, D.C. Friday night.
In this non-league contest, the Falcons opened up a 28-12 halftime lead. They also received 70 passing yards from senior quarterback Tyler Campbell on 6 of 9 passing and two interceptions from senior cornerback Mike Wallace. Good Counsel has not lost to an opponent outside of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference since falling 21-14 to Georgetown Prep on Sept. 16, 2005.
Blair 47, Blake 14
The streak is over. And how.
Blair entered Friday's season-opening contest at Blake on an 11-game losing streak. But behind an explosive ground attack led by Dayne Bolt, the Blazers stopped that trend with a resounding 47-14 victory.
Bolt, a 6-foot, 210-pound fullback, pounded his way to 127 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries, leading the Blazers to a total of 275 rushing yards. Pablo Romano added a rushing touchdown, Victor Wayne hooked up with Leopold Kenigni from five yards out and Andrew Gondor returned a punt 53 yards to account for the team's other scores.
"It was real nice to break that 11-game losing streak," Blair assistant coach Adrian Kelly said. "The kids dumped Gatorade on Coach [Jeff] Seals' head. Everybody was happy."
Clarksburg 12, Walter Johnson 7
Despite having the ball for only three offensive plays in the first quarter, Clarksburg pushed its regular-season winning streak to 11 games against visiting Walter Johnson.
Andrew Veith scored on a 50-yard interception return in the first quarter and Mark Small added a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Small rushed 19 times for 138 yards. Michael Pitsenberger scored Walter Johnson's touchdown with 1:30 remaining.
Paint Branch 35, B-CC 13
As they did a year ago, the Panthers kicked off their season by routing the Barons. In his first game as a starter, junior quarterback Eric Freniere completed 13 of 21 passes for 173 yards, including a four-yard touchdown strike to fellow junior, wide receiver Ivan Tagoe.
The ground attack was also potent for Paint Branch, with running backs Franklyn Paris, Tracy Martin and Frankie Poulos combining for 184 yards and four touchdowns. Paris scored on runs of 2, 4 and 9 yards, as the Panthers overcame a 7-6 first-quarter deficit with 21 unanswered points before halftime.
Senior quarterback Jake Boross accounted for both of B-CC's touchdowns. He hit sophomore running back Matt Bookman from 25 yards out in the first quarter and dove into the end zone from a yard out in the third. Boross hit 11 of 22 passes for 97 yards.
Seneca Valley 36, Watkins Mill 0
After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles showed why they are a Class 3A state-title contender in resounding fashion. Senior three-year starting quarterback George Lerch threw for 130 yards and scrambled for a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Three Seneca halfbacks found pay dirt on the night, led by senior Joe Rankin, who carried 13 times for 77 yards. He also led the team with 39 receiving yards, on just one catch, while sophomore Dimitri Parker returned a fumble 38 yards for a score.
Einstein 10, Wheaton 7
In a sloppy game marred by eight turnovers, the Titans' 10 unanswered points were enough to outlast the improved Knights. After losing all 10 of its games a year ago, Wheaton jumped out on top when halfback Robert Wilson plunged in from a yard out midway through the first quarter. But Einstein rushed for 163 yards on the night to help overcome four lost fumbles.
Georgetown Prep 35, Paul VI 14
After surrendering an early third-quarter touchdown because of a costly fumble, the Georgetown Prep football team scored 22 unanswered points to turn a 13-7 nail-bitter into a 35-14 pounding of host Paul VI (Va.) in the Little Hoyas' season opener Friday.
Leading the team's lopsided, non-conference victory was a balanced offense that saw quarterback Jack Schryber complete nine of 12 passes for 134 yards and running backs Kyle Sullivan (74 yards, two touchdowns) and Billy Gribbin (26 yards, touchdown) combine for 100 yards and three scores.
Parker Mangold concluded the team's 22-point third quarter with a 19-yard interception return for a touchdown.
