Ongoing slots fight is disgusting'
In 2008, Maryland voters overwhelmingly voted for slots. As of July, Anne Arundel County still has not implemented the decision. The fighting is disgusting between a small group of residents backed by the Maryland Jockey Club, who don't want a casino at Arundel Mills Mall and developers, who are ready to build. The residents assumed the slots would be located at Laurel Park racetrack when they voted in 2008. The argument that it would increase traffic, noise and crime is shallow, in light of weekly crime statistics already mentioned in papers.
The state is the loser in this battle, not one county. Needed dollars are still going out of state when Maryland coffers could have them. I guess the residents in the Arundel Mills proximity don't care if their taxes are raised to satisfy the widening deficits in the county and state.
The Cordish Cos., already licensed, were ready to begin construction by the end of this year, and now that won't happen.
I am also appalled that our governor has praised the recent court ruling. Putting off the decision until the November balloting is now a further unwarranted delay.
Residents of Maryland and Anne Arundel County need to wake up and once more make the decision to allow slots at Arundel Mills.
The lost revenue is becoming a huge factor in Maryland deficits, which ultimately affect everyone.
