Mark your calendars for a busy fall
This week's weather may not seem like fall, but the events calendar tells us that it is. Mark your calendar now for these events in and around West Laurel.
The very popular "Coffee with Cops for Seniors" will resume at 1 p.m. today at 13310 Laurel-Bowie Road next to Sapphire restaurant. As usual, host Officer Kenneth Hibbet has arranged a timely presentation for attendees featuring Karen Straughn, director of the Mediation Unit of the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division. She will discuss scams against seniors and what seniors can do to protect themselves.
Prince George's County schools will be closed Sept. 9 for Rosh Hashanah and on Sept. 14 for Primary Election Day. Don't forget to vote in the primary election.
Back to school
Back to School Night at Bond Mill Elementary, 16001 Sherwood Ave., will be on Sept. 15 for parents of pre-K through second-grade students and Sept. 16 for parents of third- to fifth-graders. Both events will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.
Watching and walking
Sept. 16 is the first West Laurel Neighborhood Watch Walk. Please watch this column and/or the West Laurel Yahoo Group for more information as it becomes available. Organizers are in the process of finalizing the route.
The next Neighborhood Watch meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the West Laurel Community Building, 16501 Supplee Lane. West Laurel's own Officer James Beasock will lead the meeting. Let's give Officer Beasock a big show of support and help get the message across criminals are not welcome here.
Next step
On a personal note, some readers may remember that nearly six years ago our family embarked upon a new and exciting journey of homeschooling with our son Eric. Now 16, Eric has just started a new adventure all his own as a freshman at Howard County Community College. We couldn't be prouder of him!
Keeping the community clean
Lately, trash and appliances have been dumped along Sweitzer Lane and Riding Stable Road near Route 198. If you witness someone dumping trash anywhere in our community, please jot down their license number and call 911 immediately. If you just see the trash, not the actual dumper, please call the Public Works Highway Maintenance Customer Service line at 301-499-8523.
