Brunswick Main Street names Stull volunteer of the year
Brunswick Councilman Walt Stull said he was "surprised" to find out Brunswick Main Street recently named him its volunteer of the year.
"I didn't expect that," he said.
Main Street executive director Patrick Kay said Stull was picked because of his dedication to Main Street. Kay said the group nominates a volunteer based on his or her service during the last year.
"Usually it's pretty clear who the volunteer of the year is," Kay said. "He's the first guy to show up, the last guy to leave. He never complains. He's always there, and what's great about Walt, what's very rare about Walt Walt doesn't do it for the award. He doesn't like the fact that we're recognizing him right now."
Stull also volunteers with the Brunswick Railroad Museum, as well as his grandson's baseball team by helping the coach and doing field maintenance. He also helps out with track and cross country meets by timing them.
"I volunteer all over the place," Stull said. "I enjoy helping people. I pitch in wherever I can. I try to help out wherever I can. Main Street seems to be one recently [that needs help]."
Stull said he doesn't participate with local organizations to get awards; the reward for him is the fulfillment of helping people.
"I like being able to help people," Stull said. "I enjoy doing it ... I don't do it for that stuff, I don't do it for the glory I do it because I like helping people."
