Wednesday night fire results in $175,000 in damage to Derwood house
A Derwood house that was undergoing some improvements caught fire Wednesday night, resulting in damages estimated at $175,000, fire officials reported.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the county Fire and Rescue Service.
About 50 firefighters were called to the 7400 block of Bee Bee Drive around 11 p.m. for the report of a house fire, Piringer said. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the upper floor of the two-story split-level when firefighters arrived, but the fire was quickly brought under control, he said.
The house was either being painted or renovated, he added.
Firefighters have deemed the house unsafe to occupy.
The fire burned undetected for some time until a passerby saw smoke coming from the house, Piringer said. The fire is believed to be accidental and to have originated in a second-floor bedroom. Fire investigators think a lamp on a timer came in contact with some combustibles in the room and ignited, he said.
