Forums scheduled to discuss parks and recreation budget
The Prince George's County Planning Board will hold two public forums to discuss the fiscal 2012 budget.
The first will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 inside the multipurpose room of Fort Washington's Harmony Hall Regional Center at 10701 Livingston Road. The second will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 inside the Landover A and B rooms of the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover.

Soldier with local ties completes training
Army Pfc. Vince Halsey recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
Halsey is the son of Yvonne Jackson of Temple Hills and the grandson of Jesse Halsey of Greenbelt.
He graduated in 2002 from Westlake High School in Waldorf and received an associate's degree in 2006 from the Heritage Institute in Falls Church, Va.
Job fair coming to county
U.S. Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington will hold a job fair Monday for residents of Montgomery and Prince George's counties at Landover's Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, at 8001 Sheriff Road.

Temple Hills student receives WSSC scholarship
Javier Arias of Temple Hills, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, recently received a $1,000 scholarship from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
As a scholarship recipient, Arias is eligible for a summer internship at WSSC. In his application, Arias wrote about how his interest in environmental engineering was piqued by a visit to his mother's native village in El Salvador, which was suffering from the drying up of an essential water source.
Arias graduated in the spring with an associate's degree in engineering from Prince George's Community College and spent the summer working on a water microbe source tracking project at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The Oxon Hill community will host its annual community Saturday at 1101 Marcy Ave. and is searching for vendors for the day's event, which will feature games, prizes, raffles and food.

Clinton church honors longtime member for service
Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton honored longtime member Herb Abercrombie during a ceremony Saturday for 25 years of outstanding dedication and service at the church.
Abercrombie, 77, of Clinton has served on the church's usher ministry since 1985 and is a former ministry president.
Church representatives said Abercrombie typically serves three services a month, sometimes serving two services on the same Sunday.
"He is always willing to lend a helping hand whenever he is not scheduled if needed, and has been known to love to usher," said member Craig James in an e-mail.
Fort Washington resident graduates from UMUC
A Fort Washington resident has graduated from the University of Maryland, University College, in Adelphi.
LaVerne A. Ebron graduated from the college with a Master of Science degree in homeland security management. She recently secured a position with the Office of Personnel Management as a federal investigator.
Fort Washington firefighter promoted to lieutenant
A Fort Washington firefighter has been promoted to the ranks of lieutenant.
Melissa D. Smothers has been promoted from shift commander at the Allentown Road fire/EMS station 832 to firefighter/medic lieutenant.
Smothers joined the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department in November 1999 as a member of Career Recruit School 30.
Nonprofit seeking volunteers
Community Advocates for Family and Youth, a Capitol Heights-based nonprofit organization that provides victim advocacy and support services, is seeking volunteers.
The organization will hold its next training session in October and is seeking residents interested in volunteering in administrative support, direct client services, teen work, court companionship and other areas.

to host free screening
ABC Dentistry will provide free oral screenings to elementary school-aged children Saturday at the business' Oxon Hill office as part of ABC Dentistry's Back to School Community Day.
The event, sponsored by Tanek Jenkins, founder and owner of ABC Dentistry, will feature games, music, food, moon bounces, crafts, cheerleader performances, liturgical dance performances, prizes and special 150 giveaways for children.

County residents complete military basic training
Air Force Airman 1st Class Darrell W. Green and Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Shannon E. Butler both recently completed eight weeks of basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Green, a 2008 graduate of Forestville Military Academy, is the son of Cynthia Green of Capitol Heights and Wayne White of Landover.
Butler, a 2007 graduate of Springdale's Charles H. Flowers High School, is the son of Teresa Butler of Landover.
School supply drives planned in Capitol Heights
Young Men Enlightening Younger Men, a Capitol Heights nonprofit mentoring group for young men, is holding its first school supply campaign.
The group, started by late Maryland State Trooper Wesley Brown in 2007, asks residents to give a $25 donation to provide a local elementary school student with one backpack and school supplies or $50 to provide three elementary school students with backpacks plus school supplies.
