Free gospel music concert coming to Seat Pleasant
The Seat Pleasant City Council will hold its free "Gospel in the Park" event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Goodwin Park at 311 68th Place.
The following Washington metropolitan area performers are expected to attend: Jimmy Russell and Because of Christ, Kendall King, Kings of Harmony, Michael White and True Praise, the Rev. Christopher Page, the Rev. Flowers and Family, The Faces of God and Tré Thomas.

Job fair comes to Landover
U.S. Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington will hold a job fair Monday for residents of Montgomery and Prince George's counties at Landover's Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, at 8001 Sheriff Road.

Forums scheduled to discuss parks and recreation budget
The Prince George's County Planning Board will hold two public forums to discuss the fiscal 2012 budget.
The first will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 inside the multipurpose room of Fort Washington's Harmony Hall Regional Center at 10701 Livingston Road. The second will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 inside the Landover A and B rooms of the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover.

Capitol Heights church to hold annual outreach event
New Life Worship Center in Capitol Heights is holding its third annual Love Alive Community Outreach from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at New Life Worship Center at 7230 Central Ave.

Baseball essay contest winners announced
The five winners of an essay contest sponsored by Prince George's County Councilwoman Ingrid Turner (D-Dist. 4) of Bowie are Arianna Richardson, 8, of Bowie; Herbert Rouson, 8, of Accokeek; Aaren Berkley, 9, of Bowie; Destiny Ogbu, 11, of Bowie; and Justin Michael McNeil, 13, of Bowie.
The five winners were selected from more than 30 entries.
Contest winners received two tickets to an Aug. 14 Washington Nationals baseball clinic and game, a baseball cap and a certificate of participation.
Bowie residents Monica Brown-Lipscomb and Henri Gardner judged the competition.
Turner sponsored the essay contest in July for students in grades three to eight who live in council District 4 to qualify to win tickets to a Washington Nationals baseball clinic and game. Students wrote essays on the topic, "Why is baseball your favorite pastime?"
Local nonprofit celebrates anniversary with cookout
The Seat Pleasant Community Development Corp. will celebrate its 15th anniversary from noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at Goodwin Park at 311 68th Place. The event is free to the public. The SPCDC will give qualifying businesses "Excellent Achievement Awards" and three "Excellent Yard Awards" to homeowners with "beautiful" yards.
Realtors are also invited to participate in an open house property tour of Seat Pleasant from Sept. 4 through Sept. 11. Those interested in volunteering or participating as a vendor or Realtor should call 301-324-2470.
Budding poets, singers get chance at teen open mic
Oakcrest Community Center will hold Café Groove, a coffeehouse performance program, starting at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at 1300 Capitol Heights Blvd. The program is an open mic competition for the chance to win prizes, and is for youths ages 10 to 17.

Central area residents complete military training
Air Force Airman 1st Class Darrell W. Green and Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Shannon E. Butler both recently completed eight weeks of basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Green, a 2008 graduate of Forestville Military Academy, is the son of Cynthia Green of Capitol Heights and Wayne White of Landover.
Butler, a 2007 graduate of Springdale's Charles H. Flowers High School, is the son of Teresa Butler of Landover.
Cheverly police planning public safety night
The Cheverly Police Department will hold its public safety night from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Town Park Pavilion next to the Cheverly Community Center, at 6401 Forest Road.

Lanham church, nonprofit sponsor supplies drive
Amistad St. Paul United Church of Christ in Lanham and a Lanham-based nonprofit organization are sponsoring at community empowerment and awareness day from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday at the church, at 9721 Good Luck Road in Lanham.
The Light of the City Resource Center of Maryland provides free college- and career-planning to underrepresented and underserved students in Prince George's and Montgomery counties and in Washington, D.C. At the event, the center's founder, Cynthia Hammond Davis of Lanham, will hold free college and financial planning workshops.
There will also be health screenings, public and nonprofit emergency social services, fire safety and prevention, home security and prevention and music and children's games.
Donations for the event's school supply drive are welcome. Event participants are asked to fill a backpack with school supplies for a child.

School supply drives planned in Capitol Heights
Young Men Enlightening Younger Men, a Capitol Heights nonprofit mentoring group for young men, is holding its first school supply campaign.
The group, started by late Maryland State Trooper Wesley Brown in 2007, asks residents to give a $25 donation to provide a local elementary school student with one backpack and school supplies or $50 to provide three elementary school students with backpacks plus school supplies.

Lanham hospital to host diabetes programs
Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham is holding Diabetes Today, a program that gives participants an overview of how to manage their diabetes.
The Monday series is from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 13, and the Tuesday series is from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Sept. 21 in the Joslin Diabetes Center on the fifth floor of the hospital's North Building, at 8100 Good Luck Road.
The program is for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes within the last six months or have never met with a diabetes educator.
Participants will learn basic diabetes self-management skills for medication, nutrition, meal planning, physical activity and blood-glucose monitoring.
Before entering the program, participants must register and submit a signed referral from their physician.
Program costs are covered by most insurance plans. Participants also have individual follow-up appointments.
The hospital also is holding Steps to Success, a program for participants about diet, exercise, preventing diabetes complications and interpreting blood-glucose levels in order to gain a greater understanding of diabetes.
The program will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Oct. 19 in the Joslin Diabetes Center.
Before entering the program, participants must register and complete an assessment. Program costs are covered by most insurance plans.
