Baysox fall to division leader
Akron earns victory by manufacturing tie-breaking run in ninth inning
Akron broke a 3-3 tie by manufacturing a run in the top of the ninth off Baysox reliever Jim Hoey. Carlos Rivero singled to lead off the inning, and Jim Drennen followed by reaching on a bunt single. After Armando Camacaro moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt and Hoey intentionally walked Jose Constanza to load the bases, Rivero scored when Jared Goedert grounded into a force out.
Aeros' reliever Neil Wagner struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to nail down a save. Akron starter Bobby Livingston, who began the season with the Baysox, combined with two relievers to strike out 11 Baysox hitters, including six of the last seven. The No. 3 through No. 8 hitters in the Bowie lineup were a combined 0 for 19.
Akron used a hit batsman and three singles to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Bowie starter Tim Bascom. The Baysox drew even in the bottom of the third as Carlos Rojas, Daniel Figueroa and Paco Figueroa led off the inning with consecutive singles and Josh Bell and Ambiorix Concepcion followed with sacrifice flies.
The Aeros got another run off Bascom in the sixth as Matt McBride and Lonnie Chisenhall hit back-to-back doubles. Once again, Bowie equalized, as Daniel Figueroa drew a one-out walk in the seventh and scored when Paco Figueroa doubled. A ground out by Josh Bell allowed Paco Figueroa to move to third with two out, but he was left stranded when Akron reliever Zach Putnam struck out Concepcion.
Livingston, who was released by the Baysox on July 1 and joined Akron several days later, got a no-decision, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. It was a considerably better outing for Livingston than his last showdown against his former team. He allowed 10 earned runs to the Baysox in a July 16 game in Akron. Bascom also ended up with a no-decision, scattering six hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
Monday night, the Baysox battled back from a 4-0 deficit, eventually tying the Altoona Curve at 6-6, only to lose, 7-6. Tuesday's loss dropped Bowie to 14 1/2 games behind the Aeros, who lead the Eastern League's Southern Division. Second-place Reading is 11 games out, followed by Erie at 12 1/2 games off the pace. The top two teams in the division will qualify for the playoffs when the season ends Sept. 7.
