Baysox split with Altoona
Bowie remains 2 1/2 games out in race for playoff spot
Bowie won the opener, 2-1, and lost the nightcap, 5-3. The Baysox (64-61) are 2 1/2 games behind the Reading Phillies in the race for the second of two Eastern League Southern Division playoff spots.
In the first game, starting pitcher Bowie Ryohei Tanaka scattered seven hits and allowed only one run over 5 2/3 innings. Luis Lebron tossed 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief to pick up his fourth save.
The game was scoreless until the Baysox scored twice in the bottom of the fifth off Altoona starter Michael Crotta. Bowie loaded the bases on a single by Dave Krynzel and walks by Adam Donachie and Jonathan Tucker. Krynzel scored when Daniel Figueroa grounded into a force out. Donachie scored on a single by Josh Bell.
Altoona answered by loading the bases with one out in the top of the sixth. Steven Lerud brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Lebron came on and struck out Jonel Pacheco to end the inning.
Bowie won despite being outhit, 7-5.
In the second game, Altoona led, 3-2, after four innings and took a 5-2 lead with runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Bowie had a chance to tie the game, as the Baysox rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Miguel Abreu singled with the bases loaded to bring home Daniel Figueroa to make it 5-3. But Altoona reliever Jared Hughes got Paco Figueroa to fly out with the bases loaded, ending the game.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. Tucker walked, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball in the first for Bowie.
Pacheco and Miles Durham led off the Altoona fourth with back-to-back home runs off Bowie pitcher Pedro Beato. The Baysox put runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Steve Torrealba knocked in Abreu on a sacrifice fly that allowed Paco Figueroa to move to third. Jason White followed by drawing a walk, giving Bowie runners at the corners, but Krynzel struck out to end the inning.
Pacheco had an RBI single off Bowie reliever Fredy Deza in the fifth. In the seventh, Bowie reliever Ryan Rodriguez allowed Altoona to load the bases, and Pacheco cashed in the Curve's fifth run with another single.
Bowie and Altoona wrap up their series with a game at 7:05 p.m. Monday before the Southern Division-leading Akron Aeros come to Prince George's Stadium for games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
