A real appreciation for fire department volunteers
I would like to respond to your article on July 30, "Chief alters fire station manning." It tells of the closing of fire service from two [Prince George's] County stations and the cutbacks they are going through in the county fire service.
It is funny how last year the [Prince George's] Fire Department talked ill of the volunteers! Now what we have is [Prince George's] has spent money in a foolish way and is now asking the volunteers to step up to the plate and bail them out. As usual the volunteers will do this and ask nothing in return except to do their job without pay.
All counties in this area can depend on their volunteers at any time, day or night. Now hopefully [Prince George's] Fire will see the dedication of these fine men and women who provide thousands of hours of service to their community every year, and the money they save. Now maybe the county will be thankful they could not create the demise of one of the best systems in the world
