Bishop McNamara High School senior guard Taylor Brown recently gave a verbal commitment to continue her basketball career at Georgetown University.

Brown, a Gazette-Star All-County First Team selection last season, was elated to make her decision.

"I chose Georgetown because once I was on campus, I knew it was the best school for me," Brown said. "One of the key factors for me was because I wanted to be close to home, because my family is very important to me. Another reason was because I would have the opportunity to compete in the Big East under coach Terri [Williams-Flournoy] and a great coaching staff."

Brown said Georgetown became interested in June after she competed with her Boo Williams Elite AAU team at a team camp held at Georgetown.

McNamara coach Rod Hairston said Brown has the potential for great success at Georgetown.

"I think she's going to make a heck of a college player," Hairston said of Brown, who averaged 18.7 points, 4.7 assists and 3.4 steals per game last season. "She's a scorer, and I think Georgetown is a good fit for Taylor. She's doing to have a good opportunity to make an immediate impact."

Brown said she also considered Richmond, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Minnesota, Miami, Towson, Loyola and George Washington.

She said she hopes to use what she has learned this summer to help the Mustangs in their quest to win the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship.

"I have improved on my leadership as a point guard, and my skills as a point guard have developed more after playing with Boo Williams," Brown said. "Now that I've [committed to Georgetown], it's not going to change my game style. I'm not going to relax. I'm going to play hard every time I step on the floor. I want to help my team get to our goals and help our players get into a situation like I'm in right now. I'm still as hungry as I was my sophomore year when I was working for the scholarship."
