District 9 council candidate under fire for voting record
Harrison says efforts outweigh ballots cast
Harrison, one of 10 people seeking the District 9 council seat in the upcoming primary, has voted once since 1992, according to a review of county election records.
Although the other nine candidates have missed occasional elections, Harrison's record is by far the barest. The lifelong county resident registered and voted in 1992 but only voted again once so far, in the 2008 presidential general election.
Harrison, 35, defended his lax voting participation, saying he has "done other things."
"Maybe there wasn't someone I liked in the other elections," said Harrison, adding that his work encouraging adoptions, serving on foundations and working with the Prince George's County Association of Realtors is more important than his voting record.
"I've had my way of giving back to the community," he said.
Other contenders in the council race seized on Harrison's record.
"Too many people have died so I could have that right. For me, it's an obligation,"said Juanita Miller, who has voted in every election since she was registered in the county in 1976, according to state records.
