County's animal shelter remains open; private rescue closing
Regarding changes at the Montgomery County Humane Society ("Humane Society shelter to close," Aug. 12), I'd like to reassure readers that the Montgomery County Animal Shelter remains open and is continuing all current programs and services. MCHS, as noted in the article, manages the main shelter under contract to the county.
In addition, MCHS, a private, nonprofit organization, owns and operates a private rescue at the Stonestreet Ave. location. Animals currently housed at this rescue will be adopted, or, through the MCHS's "Rescue Without Walls" program, will transition to foster homes, which will give them a home-like environment until they are adopted permanently. The private rescue will close after all the animals are placed.
Details of the private rescue's adoption process are at www.mchumane.org/rescueadoptionprocessandfees.shtml. For information on becoming a foster home for the new Rescue Without Walls, see mchumane.org/fosterprogram.shtml or call 240-793-4201.
