Gajewski makes bid for council seatAfter leading the National Philharmonic for more than 20 years as music director and conductor, Piotr Gajewski said he is hoping to orchestrate an efficient and well-run government by procuring a seat on the Rockville City Council. The 48-year-old resident of King Farm said leading the National Philharmonic has armed him with the tools necessary to help run a successful government body. ‘‘That organization relies very heavily on volunteers and philanthropic support from the community,” Gajewski said. ‘‘So, I feel I have the necessary analytical and leadership skills to address the challenges facing Rockville and to move the city forward.” Born in Poland, Gajewski said he and his family lived under Communist rule for the first 10 years of his life, which he said has given him ‘‘a special appreciation for Democracy and the democratic process.” He said he has witnessed the process first-hand while watching and engaging in Monday night Citizens’ Forum sessions during Rockville City Council meetings. As a result, Gajewski said he feels that he can do better for the city. ‘‘Rockville is a changing city and growing rapidly,” he said. ‘‘With growth comes new challenges of needed infrastructure and support systems, and I have been watching the current Rockville City Council struggling with these issues and I feel we can do better. ‘‘I have much experience in finding innovative solutions, building coalitions and bringing people together, and I think I can play a positive role in providing the needed leadership in the challenges that face the city today and in the future,” he added. One of his key issues is creating more space in Rockville City Hall, which Gajewski said is already stretched beyond its limits, as well as building a new facility for the Rockville City Police Department. ‘‘Our current police force is crammed into City Hall. Ninety people are working in a space intended for 30,” he said. ‘‘So, building a new state-of-the-art police station is a high priority,” Gajewski added. He said he would also concentrate on finding solutions to Rockville’s traffic problems. Gajewski said he is looking forward to hitting the campaign trail and will make door-to-door visits in addition to participating in any scheduled candidate forums. He said he has served on the boards of art organizations, coached his daughter’s Montgomery Soccer Inc. team, and volunteers and lectures in county schools. Gajewski holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the University of Cincinnati, as well as a law degree from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. Gajewski lives with his wife, Tisha, and their three children.
