Brookeville native named Teacher of the YearKatie Chumas Bates, who grew up in Brookeville and is now a third-grade teacher, was named Teacher of the Year in Powhatan County, Va. A 1998 graduate of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Bates graduated four years later from the College of Charleston in South Carolina with a degree in elementary education, and has been teaching at Pocahontas Elementary School for four years, said her father, John Chumas, who still resides in Brookeville. She also balances her teaching with part-time graduate studies at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., her father said. According to the June 13 edition of Powhatan Today, this was Bates’ second nomination for Teacher of the Year honors. Olney Help remindsresidents it can help Olney Help, an all-volunteer organization that provides individuals and families with short-term emergency assistance, want to remind area residents that is can offer assistance during trying times. The organization provides fresh and non-perishable food items, limited financial aid to avert eviction and⁄or utility termination, essential medication, and access to resources for additional services from private and governmental agencies. They include Rebecca Donovan, daughter of Christine and Thomas Donovan of Olney; Lauren Ojalvo, daughter of Philip and Catherine Ojalvo of Olney; and Vanessa Goldey, daughter of Richard and Diana Kubu of Brookeville. *Olney resident Kevin Fields is one of eight recipients of a Canisius College Raichle Pre-Law Scholarship. Fields is a political science and urban studies major and was also inducted into the DiGamma Honor Society. He will begin his senior year at Canisius, located in Buffalo, N.Y., this fall. *Leah Mines of Olney was a producer of a radio program at Susquehanna University that took third place in the 2006 Pennsylvania Associated Press News Awards. The station was recognized for its live play-by-play broadcasts of the Susquehanna University at Albright College football game on Sept. 16, 2006. Mines majored in English and secondary education. A 2003 graduate of Sherwood High School, she is the daughter of David Mines of Olney and Anna Koutelos of New Jersey.
