West Laurel: As fall begins, time to chat with police
Now that summer is almost over, the Prince George's County police department will resume its "Coffee with Cops for Seniors" on Sept. 2. This popular meeting with our local police officers and other community experts, hosted by Officer Kenneth Hibbert, was sorely missed over the summer. As before, the meetings will be held at 13310 Laurel Bowie Road at 1 p.m. the first Thursday of every month.
The featured speaker for September's meeting is Karen Straughn from the Attorney General's Office of Prince George's County. Straughn is director of the Consumer Protection Division's Mediation Unit. She will discuss scams against seniors and new laws enacted to protect seniors. Straughn will also discuss what seniors should do if they become victims of an unsavory business deal.
As always, thanks to Officer Hibbert and WLCA's own Beth Evans for their hard work in organizing and getting the word out about these valuable meetings for our community's seniors.
Keep on recycling the appropriate materials
If you're one of the regular contributors to the Abitibi Paper Recycling bins outside Bond Mill Elementary School, thank you so much. We've been thrilled to see the participation level getting back to where it used to be before the Georgetown bins were removed this past winter. However, someone has been putting cardboard boxes that appear to be from a home remodeling job in the bins, and not only do the boxes sometimes contain Styrofoam packing and plastic that contaminate our load, but the cardboard itself is also a contaminant for our recycler. Please know that the PTO really appreciates your participation in our recycling program, but we appreciate even more when you put only appropriate items in the bin.
Please drop off your newspapers, magazines, junk mail, household paper, office paper, paperback books, etc. You're welcome to drop off your shredded paper so long as it is in plastic bags. Hardback books may go into the bins so long as their hardback is removed. Spiral notebooks are fine, as our items with staples. Please remember that these bins cannot accept cardboard, phone books or household trash! I check the bins at least once a week, but if you notice they're full, please feel free to call me at the number listed above.
Along with our paper recycling program, the PTO is also ramping up its inkjet cartridge and cell phone recycling program. Please bring your used inkjet cartridges, laser toners and cell phones to the school for recycling. There is a box just inside the cafeteria for your donations.
If your business is interested in recycling these items, contact me and I can arrange for preprinted shipping labels to be sent to you so that you can ship your cartridges directly to the recycler without making the trip to the school for drop-off.
