University Park Women's Club awards scholarships
Andrea Buzard of Hyattsville and Julia Ruth of University Park have each received $1,000 scholarships from the University Park Woman's Club. The two were honored at a UPWC meeting on June 7.
Buzard received the club's Doris McPhee Memorial Scholarship, given annually to an outstanding senior at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville. Buzard will enroll this fall at Penn State Altoona, where she plans to major in nursing.
Ruth, a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, was awarded the annual UPWC Scholarship, given to a senior who lives in University Park or is related to a town resident or UPWC member. She will major in physics and film studies at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Beltsville resident wins
county teaching award
Barbara Hughes, a teacher at High Point High School in Beltsville, received Prince George's County's Outstanding Educator award at a ceremony on May 26 in Greenbelt.
Hughes, who lives in Beltsville, is a family and consumer science teacher and was one of four county high school teachers to receive the award, which honors teachers who have made outstanding contributions to their students' education.
She was nominated by High Point assistant principal Reeda Butler and received more than 35 letters of support from colleagues, students, parents and community members.
At the May 26 ceremony, Hughes received a Congressional citation from Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington, and round-trip airfare to any destination in the country, courtesy of Southwest Airlines.
Local Boy Scouts
receive promotions
Two members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 740 in College Park have been promoted to the rank of First Class Scout.
Anthony Barnes, 14, of Beltsville and Tom Pavlat, 13, of Berwyn Heights each earned the honor by meeting several requirements. Anthony's training culminated with learning to navigate without a compass, while Tom's final task was to discuss citizenship with Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo.
First Class Scout is the fourth-highest of seven ranks in Boy Scouts of America. The highest level is Eagle Scout. Troop 740 meets at Holy Redeemer Park in College Park.
Residents make
dean's list at Syracuse
Several area residents were named to the spring 2010 semester dean's list at Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y.
The list honored all students who earned a grade-point average of 3.4 or greater during the semester. Recipients included Syreeta Herbert of Beltsville, Gregory Papp of Greenbelt, Karnishia Funderburk of Hyattsville and Emma Krupnick of University Park.
Syracuse University is a private institution located in Central New York and founded in 1870. It has nearly 20,000 students.
College Park Moose Lodge hosts blood drive
College Park Moose Lodge 453 and the American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in College Park at the lodge, 3700 Metzerott Road in College Park.
The lodge has hosted blood drives for more than 20 years, said lodge member and blood drive committee chairman Bob Hanna. It hosts drives four times a year, with the next drive coming in November.
Lodge volunteers will assist Red Cross workers and provide refreshments for donors. Donors can schedule an appointment by calling Hanna at 301-362-7418. Walk-in donors are also welcome.
High Point to host
school uniform sale
High Point High School in Beltsville will host an in-school student uniform sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Students at the school are required to wear khaki pants and blue shirts embroidered with the school's logo. The school will be selling pants, golf shirts, sweaters and fleece pullovers ranging from $16.50 to $35 each.
Uniforms can also be purchased at the Campus Outfitters store at 5112 Berwyn Road in College Park or at www.campusoutfitters.com by entering the school code "HP1482."

County residents earn high marks at North Carolina A&T
Several area residents have made the dean's list at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Greenbelt residents include broadcast production major Christal Simms, electrical engineering major Jaheed Allen and accounting major Thomas Cooper. Hyattsville resident and psychology major Joseph Williams also made the list.
The university was founded in 1861 and enrolls approximately 10,000 students.
Hyattsville native attends summer arts institute
Crystal Parks, a Hyattsville native and rising senior at Suitland High School, attended a Pre-College Summer Institute at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Parks attended the dance program, which is designed to give performers chance to practice their skills and explore new techniques in a university environment.
The school is the nation's first university devoted to visual, performing and communication arts and enrolls 2,400 graduate and undergraduate students.
Basic combat graduates
have Hyattsville ties
Raoul F. Nkolla, the stepson of Hyattsville resident Victorine Happy; and Julian J. Carter, nephew of Hyattsville resident Regina Carter, have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
Nkolla and Carter spent nine weeks training in the Army mission, physical fitness and rifle marksmanship.
Greenbelt resident graduates
Colin Byrd of Greenbelt graduated from the Randolph-Macon Academy in Virginia in May. Byrd, the son of Calvin and Jacqueline Byrd, played on the school's basketball team and will attend the University of Pittsburgh this fall.
Randolph-Macon, founded in 1892, is a boarding school for students in grades 6 through 12. It is located in Front Royal, Virginia.
NAACP plans candidate forum
The Prince George's County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will hold a series of candidate forums Aug. 16 for County Council and Board of Education seats in Districts 1 through 6.
The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Laurel High School Auditorium, located at 8000 Cherry Lane in Laurel.
David Turner, chairman of the Prince George's Historical Preservation Commission, will serve as moderator.
