Brown picked to head lieutenant governors group
Maryland's second-in-command vows to share best practices'
Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown is No. 1 among No. 2s.
The Democrat was elected Friday as chairman of the National Lieutenant Governors Association at the group's annual meeting in Biloxi, Miss.
Brown, who previously served as vice chairman, succeeds Virginia Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a Republican, and said he looked forward to working with other association members "to share ideas and best practices."
Founded in 1962, the National Lieutenant Governors Association is a professional organization representing the elected officials who are first in line of succession to the governors in all but nine states and territories, where the secretary of state, state Senate president or attorney general fills a vacancy in the office of governor.
Brown, the nation's highest-ranking elected official to have served a tour of duty in Iraq, has taken a lead role in preparing for the influx of thousands of military jobs to Maryland as a result of base realignment.
He also is co-chairing a panel that is reviewing the implementation of federal health care reform in Maryland.
