Mustangs win softball crownThe Lady Mustangs U-12 softball team rallied in the championship game to win the title at the 15-team Winfield Classic Tournament earlier this month. The Mustangs captured the championship game with a 7-6 victory against the Gaithersburg Titans in eight innings. Caitlin Gordon doubled home Sarah Coss with one run in the top of the eighth. Gordon then stole third base and scored on a groundout by Danielle Muir to give the Mustangs a 7-5 lead. Aided by a passed ball, the Titans scored to make it 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth. But Mustangs’ left fielder Juliet Denton ranged into foul territory to record the first out of the inning and Kayla Webster and Jamie Abell made plays in the infield to retire the final two Titans’ batters. The Mustangs trailed, 3-2, after six innings, but Lindsay Greene doubled home two runs and Abell brought Greene home with a single to give the Mustangs a 5-3 advantage. The Titans got three straight hits to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and had the potential winning run at third base with one out. Abell and Gordon made plays in the infield to stop two potential winning runs at the plate. The Mustangs had lost to Germantown, 6-2, earlier in the tournament, but rebounded by scoring double-digit runs in four straight wins after that to reach the title game. Twelve of the team’s 13 players are Prince George’s residents, including Kayla Anderson of Bowie, Marissa Hughes, Asia Orr, Qyntia Parks-Lewis and Markia Shade of Upper Marlboro and Maggie Johnson of Clinton. Webster is a Berwyn Heights resident, Abell is from Glenn Dale, Coss is from Landover, Gordon resides in Cheltenham and Muir and Denton are from Upper Marlboro. Greene is a Waldorf resident. The team went 3-0 in pool play, with wins against the Kenner Angels (60-29), the Georgia Pistols (62-26) and the West Virginia Breakers (56-32). The Stars opened bracket play with a 39-26 victory against the MA Comets. Next, they erased a 12-point second-quarter deficit to beat the Carolina All-Stars, 44-35. Fairfax raced to a 26-3 halftime lead against the ISSA Lady Elite of Indiana before finishing with a 38-28 win. The Lady Elite worked its way through the loser’s bracket and made its way to the title game for a rematch against the Stars. Elite led the game late in the fourth quarter, but the Stars tied it to force overtime. The game went to double-overtime before Fairfax clinched the national title with clutch foul shooting and solid defense. The Stars went 58-1 this season. The team also includes Mikayla Venson, Leeah Betourd, Lindsey Abed, Karlie Cronin, Breeja Wilkins, Carolyn Oare, Kelly Koshuta and Teirra Floyd under coaches Bob McCormick, Ron James, Jeff Boykin and Donald Hatcher.
