Local teams win tournaments
The Main Event Cobras U-16 and U-15 boys' basketball teams took first place at the AYBT Nationals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The U-16 team went 6-0 and defeated the Lowell Red Arrows, 44-28, in the championship game. Members of the team are: Johnathan Middlebrooks, Jason Amos, Britton Anderson, Josh Jones, Chase Ward-McEwan, Colby Williams, Adrien Straughn, Hakeem Harrison, Cory Blake, Victor Tabbs, Jamie Forrester and Daniel Lipford. Coaches of the team are Shawn Johnson and John Middlebrooks.
The U-15 team went 5-1 and defeated the Motor City Magic, 63-55, in the championship game. Members of the team are: Anthony Davis, Aaron Hopkins, Phillip Poteat, Donte Allison, Khaleeq Everett, Erik Thomas, Blake Williams and Sean Wood. Coaches of the team are Bruce Blake and Anthony Davis Sr.
The Maryland Ruff Riders U-14 boys' basketball team won the inaugural ESPN Rise National Championship in Orlando, Fla. The Ruff Riders finished first in their pool and advanced in bracket play by beating the Minnesota Jaguars. The Ruff Riders defeated the Fayetteville Stars in the championship game. Members of the team are: Stephan Jiggetts, Marquise Wright, Wayne Johnson, Jr., Daylin Davis, Davon Wiley, Mitchell Hill, Deondre Jolley and Kyler Green.
Sharks end season strong
The Fort Washington Sharks closed out their season with with several individual champions at the Division D meet and several qualifiers for Saturday's Prince-Mont All-Star Meet at Whitehall Pool and Tennis in Bowie.
Akeyla Holley was a triple winner in the meet in the 11-12 girls' butterfly, freestyle and individual medley. She will participate in the all-star meet in all of those events. Arthur Walton qualified for the all-star meet and was a double winner in the 15-18 boys' freestyle and breaststroke.
Marcus Dennis (13-14 boys' free) and Gabby Griffin (13-14 girls' free) were individual winners and both qualified for the all-star meet. Madison Tompkins (U-8 breast), boys' medley relay (Walton, Brandon Dennis, Walton Irving and Joey Patrizio) and the girls' graduated relay (Gabby Stevenson, Holley, Griffin and Marlena Fernandez) also qualified for the all-star meet.
Basketball camp
NBA player Jarret Jack will sponsor a basketball camp from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. from Aug. 10-14 at the Southern Friendship Athletic Facility. The camp is for boys and girls between the ages of 7-16. Before and after care services are free and available from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Cost of the camp is $265 with each player leaving with a special gift and prizes. Looking for players
The Temple Hills Bison AAU football club is looking for football players and cheerleaders ages 5-15. There are no weight restrictions for the football teams, and previous playing experience is not required. Practices will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at Allenwood Elementary School, 6300 Harley Lane in Temple Hills.
