Bowie State prepares to host Classic
Two-time defending CIAA champ Shaw University to visit Bulldogs Sept. 26
The Prince George's County Black Chamber of Commerce announced plans this week for the sixth annual Prince George's Classic.
This year's game will match Shaw University against Bowie State University at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at BSU's Bulldog Stadium. Shaw won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title the past two seasons. The Bears tied for the top spot in the CIAA Western Division with a 6-1 mark and went 8-3 overall, beating Elizabeth City State, 36-7, in the league title game. They were picked to finish second in the league this year in a preseason poll of the CIAA's football coaches.
Bowie State is coming off a 5-4 season, including a 4-3 league mark. The Bulldogs finished tied for second in the CIAA Eastern Division last year. This season, Bowie State is under new leadership, as Damon Wilson has taken over for Mike Lynn, who stepped down after last season.
Wilson, a Suitland High School graduate, was an assistant coach with Prairie View A&M last year, and previously had assistant coaching stints at Texas Southern and Bowie State.
The Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the CIAA in the preseason coaches' poll. Junior defensive back Terrence Peete was the only Bowie State player named to the All-CIAA Preseason Team. Peete had 33 solo tackles and 11 assists last year, and also had three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Bowie State's season gets under way on Aug. 29 at Slippery Rock (Pa.) University.
The Bulldogs are at home all four Saturdays in September and have their last home date Oct. 17 against St. Paul's.
The Prince George's Classic will get underway with a kickoff reception Sept. 24 at National Harbor, and will include a college fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at The Mall at Prince George's in Hyattsville. For information, visit www.princegoergesclassic.com.
