Quick Hits: Weekend picks for Prince George's County
Laurel Mill Playhouse eager to relive those disco nights; movies continue in National Harbor
Are there bellbottom jeans, platform shoes and powder blue leisure suits hidden away in some chest that you hope strangers never find? Dust them off and relive those few years of the late 1970s that continue to embarrass America.
Laurel Mill Playhouse's summer youth musical is "Disco Inferno" and it opens this weekend at the theater, located on Main Street in Laurel.
The story is adapted from the classic story of "Faust," a man who willingly sells his soul to the devil to get everything he desired, only to discover that he already had everything he needed.
The German story has been adapted for books, operas, film, ballet and even video games, but this may be the only adaptation that features disco music.
The artists featured in the show include some of disco's most famous names, including Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, K.C. and the Sunshine Band and others.
Tickets are $15, $13 for seniors and students. Call 301-617-9906.
Last chance theater: This weekend is your last chance to see the Prince George's County Summer Teen Theater's production of "Footloose" or "Greenbelt Voices" at Greenbelt Arts Center.
Out with the 1980s, in with comic book heroes: This year National Harbor is using themes for its free movies on Sunday night. Animated flicks dominated May and June, 80s flicks took over July and superheroes will be featured during August. The next five features are, in order, "Superman," "Iron Man," "Batman," "The Incredible Hulk" and "Spider-Man."
The series concludes in September with a series of films produced or directed by Steven Spielberg: "The Land Before Time," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Jurassic Park."
The films are free and outdoors, so check the weather first. Bring something to sit on.
