U-8 basketball team takes fourth in AAU Nationals
The D.C. Assault Gold U-8 boys' basketball team finished in fourth place at the AAU Division 1 National Tournament earlier this month in Memphis, Tenn. The team finished its season with a 43-5 record. Three of the losses came against the eventual AAU national champion Metrolina Havoc of Charlotte, N.C.
The Assault won all three of their games in preliminary pool play, and then won their first two games in bracket play, 25-11 against Future Players and 40-33 against the New York Gauchos. The Assault trailed the Gauchos, 21-14, at halftime before outscoring them 26-12 in the second half. Zion Harmon went 7 of 7 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.
That win set up a semifinal game against the Havoc, which the Assault lost, 42-38. The team led by two points at halftime, but was outscored 9-3 and missed nine free throws in the third quarter. In the consolation final, the Assault dropped a 35-21 decision to the Detroit Elite.
The team includes Delonnie Hunt, Chase Beasley, Julius Ellerbe, Mike Forbes, Marcus Gorham, Mekhi Price, Benjamin Williams, Darius Miles and Jordan Sharp, and coaches Tyrone Cole Craig Brooks, Mike Harmon and Melissa Richmond.
