Swimmers set for season-ending all-star meet
Local pools make mark in divisional championships
The Prince-Mont Swim League season will come to a close with the annual all-star meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at Whitehall Pool & Tennis in Bowie. The league held its divisional championships last weekend.
In the Division C meet at Northridge Pool in Bowie, Marlton Swim & Recreation finished fifth with 172 points. Greenbelt Municipal won the meet with 252 points, capping an undefeated season.
Marlton's Zack Spain narrowly prevailed in the 11-12 boys' 50-meter breaststroke (45.19 seconds). Carmela Rourke won the 15-18 girls' 50 breast (39.34). Sam Cooper won the 11-12 girls' 50 backstroke (42.01). Trevor Dickson captured the boys' 8-and-under 25 back. Rourke is seeded fifth in the breast for Saturday's all-star meet.
Marlton swimmers were successful in the relay events. Alina Zilevicius, Rourke, Casey Gouldman and Tracie Tucker were a close third in the girls' 18-and-under 200 medley relay
(2 minutes, 30.8 seconds). Sam Shenot, Jordyn Pettiford, Trevor Dixon and Gaby Shenot took second in the mixed 8-and-under relay. Jeremy Carrington, Spain, Ben Lawless and Eric Carr were third in the 9-18 boys' graduated relay. Katlyn Alley, Christine Wesley, Danielle Thompson and Kaitlin Gray finished fourth in the 9-18 girls' graduated relay.
Fort Washington swimmers tallied 180 1/2 points and placed fifth at the Division D meet at Indian Head last Saturday, but a handful of Sharks performed well enough to earn berths and high seeds in the all-star meet.
Akeyla Holley won the 11-12 girls' 50 butterfly (34.19) and 50 freestyle (29.5) to establish new age group records for Indian Head Pool in both events. Holley also was second in the 100 individual medley. She is seeded first in the 50 free, second in the 100 IM and fourth in the fly for the all-star meet. Gabrielle Griffin won the 13-14 girls' 50 free (30.59) in a pool-record time. Arthur Walton won the 15-18 boys' 100 free (1:01.68). Jared Saunders set another pool record in the
11-12 boys' 50 breast (42.09). Basem Magd won the 15-18 boys' 50 breast (36.78).
In the opening event of the Division D meet, the Fort Washington quartet of Walton, Brandon Dennis, Magd and Joey Patrizio finished in a tie for first with the Smallwood Village team of Alex Chung, Tyler Manion, Kevin Kinter and Harley Roth in 2:11.62 in the boys' 18-under 200 medley relay.
Temple Hills played host to the Division E meet and finished in third place. Several of its swimmer are headed to the all-star meet.
Dominick Summers won the
13-14 boys' 50 fly (33.49). Patricia Kelshaw won the 15-18 girls' 50 fly (35.26). Allen Myers took first place in the 13-14 boys' 50 free (29.37), 50 breast and 100 IM. Alia Lawson captured the 13-14 girls' 50 free. Nicholas Willoughby won the 15-18 boys' 50 breast. Austin Lawson, Darius Adams, Allen Myers and Willoughby combined to win the 9-18 boys' 200 free relay.
Oxon Hill finished second in the Division G meet, while first-year squad Kings Landing Swim Team from La Plata cruised to the title with
515 points. Oxon Hill (208) edged Parks and Recreation Pride (199) for second, followed by College Park Woods (119) and Bolling Air Force Base (66). All distances in the Division G meet were held in yards, not meters.
Ricky Laforte won the 13-14 boys' 50-yard fly and 100 IM. Cameron Stafford took the girls' 8-and-under 25 free and 25 breast. Seth Adams won the 9-10 boys' 25 breast. Dominique Cheatham won the 11-12 girls' 50 breast. Adams, Jonathan Jackson, Garrett Duffer and Ryan Casey combined to take second in the 9-18 boys' graduated relay.
The Accokeek Swim Team
(194 points) finished third and the Brandywine Blue Wave (151) finished fifth in the five-team Division F meet at Prince George's Pool in Mount Rainier. The hosts won the meet with 340 1/2 points.
Accokeek's William Micknick won the boys' 8-and-under 25 breast and back. Accokeek also had first-place finishes from Jared Simon (boys' 8-and-under 25 free), Elena Seaton (girls' 11-12 50 breast) and Maria Ray (girls' 8-and-under 25 back). Micknick, Lydia Bowman, Ray and Simon teamed to win the mixed 8-and-under 100 free relay.
Brandywine's winners included Traleia McCorkle (girls' 10-and-under 25 fly), Zach Brockman (boys' 15-18 50 breast), Kevin McNamara (boys' 15-18 50 back) and Sydney Isom (girls'
12-and-under 100 IM). McNamara, Brockman, Chris Hogue and Andrew Wood won the boys' 18-and-under 200 medley relay.
