Bladensburg seniors strut their stuff on the runway
Residents of Emerson House, a senior independent-living facility in Bladensburg, held their annual fashion show July 16, modeling clothing that ranged from church outfits to evening gowns.
Twenty residents aged 62 and up participated, some sporting traditional clothing from their native country of Korea, said Resident Services Coordinator Marilyn Blount.
"They didn't walk down the catwalk, they danced," Blount said. "The music was almost too slow."
Students graduate from Salisbury University
Several local residents received their bachelor's degrees from Salisbury University this spring.
Graduates include Kyle Loughlin, David Preston and Jonathan Welch of the Beltsville area; Sarah Loutsch and Frank Weston of the Berwyn Heights area; Olufunmilayo Sogsbesan, Olayinka Sogsbesan and Amanda Browne of the Bladensburg Area; Sharon Esonu and Carolyne King of the College Park area and Elizabeth Okutuga of Hyattsville.
The 85-year-old university, located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, has more than 8,000 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Residents earn degrees
from music college
The Berklee College of Music awarded degrees to several local residents at its 2010 commencement ceremony. Christopher Dingman of Greenbelt received a degree in professional music, Orlando Dixon of Colmar Manor received a degree in music business and management and Audrey Knuth of Greenbelt received a degree in music production and engineering.
The college, located in Boston, has been training musicians for more than 50 years.
UM student wins Miss Maryland pageant
Lindsay Staniszewski, a student at the University of Maryland, College Park, has been crowned Miss Maryland 2010.
Staniszewski, a senior majoring in communications, placed ahead of 21 other contestants at the 75th annual weeklong pageant, which culminated June 26 in Hagerstown.
Staniszewski, who is from Edgewater, is on pace to graduate from UM in December. By winning Miss Maryland, she has advanced to compete in the annual Miss America pageant, held in January in Las Vegas.
Hyattsville resident graduates from New England college
Yah F. Sangne of Hyattsville graduated from Western New England College May 22. Sangne earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering. Western New England College is located in Springfield, Mass.

Casey Kohnhorst of Brentwood and Simone Sydnor of Hyattsville graduated from Hood College May 22. Kohnhorst graduated cum laude. Hood College is located in Frederick.
Son of Bladensburg resident graduates from basic training
Air Force Airman Stephen S. Beng, the son of Bladensburg's Sokhoun Sy, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
The eight-week program includes intensive training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic principles of warfare.
Elizabeth Seton students
turn trash into cash
The Ecology Club at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg has found a creative way to get rid of trash like candy wrappers and old juice drink pouches.
The students have partnered with a company called TerraCycle, which pays two cents for each piece of refuse collected and turns the garbage into products like backpacks, coolers and even fences.
In less than a year, students have collected more than 3,200 pieces of refuse, raising money to help pay for new recycling containers for the school.
"Many of our students bring in drink pouches to school anyway," said Ecology Club moderator Jean Baker in a statement. "[Now] these pouches can be made into something useful and not end up in a landfill."
Adelphi resident receives doctorate from VCU
Pia Stanard of Adelphi has received a doctoral degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
Stanard graduated magna cum laude with a doctorate in counseling psychology. She is completing an internship in White Plains, N.Y., and plans to found her own private practice, called the Family Center, this fall in Columbia.
Stanard is a 1999 graduate of High Point High School in Beltsville.
Hyattsville student makes dean's list
Chike Bascom Waugh Croslin of Hyattsville was named to the Spring 2010 Dean's List at Washington University in St. Louis. Croslin is a graduate of Dematha Catholic High School.
Students at Washington University must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 to make the list.
Students named to St. Mary's College of Maryland dean's list
A number of area residents were named to the spring 2010 semester dean's list at St. Mary's College of Maryland, including: Rose Ayla Akca of Brentwood; Rachel N. Ali of Hyattsville; Erika S. Damare of Hyattsville; Tristan Thomas Epp-Schmidt of Hyattsville; Maxwell J. Fetter of Hyattsville; Memunatu Kargbo of Bladensburg; Jessica M. Marbourg of Brentwood; Nicholas Presley Rabano of Hyattsville; Steven Sterling Sheridan of Hyattsville; and Marie Rose Thorpe of Hyattsville.
Students named to the dean's list must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or better. St. Mary's College of Maryland is located in St. Mary's City.
College Park VFW chapter hosts pig roast
The Phillips-Kleiner Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5627 in College Park will host a pig roast at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The chapter's men's auxiliary will host the event, which will include food, drinks, dessert, a live band, silent auction and raffle. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $7 for children ages 13 and under. Children's meals will consist of burgers rather than roast pig.

Beltsville to host annual National Night Out
Residents are invited to attend Beltsville's annual National Night Out celebration, held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Prince George's County Police District VI headquarters in Beltsville.
The outdoor event will feature free food, games, police demonstrations and appearances by community groups and government officials. Residents will get a firsthand look at police vehicles and equipment while also learning crime prevention and awareness tips.
National Night Out, now in its 27th year, is designed to entertain and inform residents while fostering a better relationship between themselves and law enforcement officials.
District VI headquarters is located at 4321 Sellman Road, next to the Beltsville Branch Library.
