Bowie groups plan National Night Out event for Tuesday

The Bowie Police Department, community organizations and local businesses have scheduled the city's annual National Night Out Against Crime from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Allen Pond, 3330 Northview Drive.
The family event provides information to citizens about crime prevention, how to identify theft and raising public safety awareness with input from groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Free hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream and water are available, along with free child identification kits, free comics and a moon bounce. For more information, call Bowie police at 301-575-2480.
Candidates' forums available on DVDs
Anyone interested in learning more about the candidates running for sheriff and state's attorney in Prince George's County is welcome to attend an evening forum sponsored by the HOA Community Coalition, made up of groups from Kettering, Woodmore and other neighborhoods west of Bowie.
The event, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, will be hosted by Reid Temple A.M.E. Church at 11400 Glenn Dale Boulevard in Glenn Dale.
The HOA collation also held a forum on July 22 for state House and Senate candidates in District 23 and on July 27 for candidates running for county executive and County Council District 6.
DVDs of the forums are available for $15 from the church bookstore online at www.reidtemple.org.
Four run for Democratic Central Committee in 23B
Henry "Hank" Arrington of Upper Marlboro, William Lance Blake of Upper Marlboro, David Jacobs of Bowie and Cassandra "Casey" Lewis of Upper Marlboro are running for the Democratic Central Committee in District 23B.
Bowie CLAW to meet Aug. 10
Bowie CLAW plans to meet at 7 p.m. on Aug. 10 at the Bowie Community Center, 3209 Stoneybrook Drive for a discussion of upcoming events. All interested individuals are welcome.
Bowie student awarded scholarship at Penn State
Brandon M. Smith, son of Charles and Stacy Smith of Bowie, has been awarded a Chancellor's Scholarship for outstanding incoming freshman at Penn State Schuylkill, where he plans to pursue a degree in musical theater.
Smith has performed in more than 25 productions in the U.S. and Europe, including starring in Debbie Allen's "Alex in Wonderland" at the Kennedy Center in 2007, according to an e-mail from his mother Stacy Smith.
"Not only has he overcame many obstacles to get this far, but he did so while remaining an active, positive member of his community," she wrote.
At Heather Hills Elementary, Smith participated in Destination ImagiNation, and at Benjamin Tasker Middle, he participated in the Black Saga Competition, Stacy Smith said. In 2005-2006, he was selected for Congressional Young Leaders and in 2007 he was chosen to participate in Youth Leadership Bowie.
While a student at a private school in Lanham, Smith was an honors student who was active in student government, drama, choir and yearbook, she wrote.
Bowie's Glass Menagerie' wins award
The Bowie Community Theater's April production of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" was honored on July 11 in Germantown with a Ruby Griffith Award. The awards are presented annually by the British Embassy for plays produced by community theaters in the region.
"The Glass Menagerie" shared the first runner-up award for Outstanding Achievement in a Play with "The Goat or Who is Sylvia?" presented by the Silver Spring Stage.
"We were very, very pleased," said producer Joanne Bauer, a long-time BCT member and Bowie resident. "Every element in the entire production came together beautifully. It was a top-notch production, beautifully done."
The show's lighting was done by BCT President John Nunemaker of Crofton, and the show was directed by Craig Allen Mummey of Annapolis, who also directed "The Goat or Who is Sylvia?"
Bowie airman completes basic training in Texas
Air Force Airman Ashley A. Thompson recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
The son of Wanda Harris of Bowie, Thompson is a 2007 graduate of Fairmont Heights High School in Seat Pleasant.
He completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills, according to a press release. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Local students make dean's list at Washington University
DeMarco Anthony Mitchener of Bowie and Yasmin Serwaa Boakye of Mitchellville were named to the dean's list for the spring 2010 semester at Washington University in St. Louis.
Mitchener is a graduate of Queen Anne School in Upper Marlboro and Boakye is a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt. Both are enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences. To qualify for the dean's list, students must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.
Degrees awarded by UMES to area students
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore recently awarded the following degrees to students from the Bowie area. They include Christopher Clarke, Bachelor of Arts, applied design; Shalonda Gladden, Bachelor of Arts, sociology; Olajumoke Jinadu, Bachelor of Science, accounting; Ashlee Love, Bachelor of Science, rehabilitation services; Anita Mbah, Bachelor of Science, physician assistant; Stephanie Springs, Bachelor of Science, biology; and Sharmelle Williams, Bachelor of Science, criminal justice.
Justin Ogburn of Mitchellville was also awarded a Bachelor of Science in aviation sciences.
Twenty area students on dean's list at UMES

County students graduate from Excelsior College
Bowie-area residents Natalie Valentina Cameron and Patricia Maxine Palmer recently graduated from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y. Each earned a Bachelor of Science degree.
Student from Bowie earns degree from Shepherd University
Christopher Ryan McGucken of the Bowie area was among the 715 students who received degrees at Shepherd University's 137th commencement on May 17.
Located in West Virginia's eastern panhandle, Shepherd University is a public-supported university with a strong liberal arts emphasis in its curriculum.
Student from Bowie on the dean's list at Harpur College
Emily A. Bruno of the Bowie area made the dean's list at Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University, State University of New York. To be on the list, students must have a GPA of at least 3.5.
Military service members complete basic training
Air National Guard Airman Damon J. Washington, the son of Barbara Washington of Lanham and a 2008 graduate of Duval High School in Lanham, recently completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Washington completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate's degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.
Marine Corps Pvt. LaRue D. Martin, the son of Sharleen and Alvin Martin of Glenn Dale, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.
During the basic training, the recruits engaged in physical conditioning and trained in first-aid, combat water survival and hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons. Recruits also studied the Marine Corps' core values honor, courage and commitment.
Neighborhood plans community safety day
The Princess Garden Hickory Hill Neighborhood Association, Inc. is holding a community safety day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Brightlea Drive in Lanham.
The event will be held on Brightlea Drive from First Street to Hardwood Drive.
Representatives from the Prince George's County Police Department and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will be present.
There will also be animal control demonstration and bicycle safety information.
