Try a natural preserve at Sligo Creek
After reading the article "Residents demand county keep golf on Sligo Creek site," [July 17] I felt compelled to point out that there were many Silver Spring and Takoma Park residents at the July 16 Planning Board meeting who were advocating for the parks department to implement the natural garden preserve option for the site.
The Planning Board made it clear that there is a slim chance that the County Council will renegotiate the lease with county revenue authority (operator of golf courses) so I agree with Planning Board Chairman Royce Hanson that "we have to face reality" about the closure of Sligo Creek Golf Course.
Of the remaining options that the Planning Board directed parks staff to consider, the natural garden preserve is clearly the most environmentally and fiscally responsible future plan for the site. This is a unique opportunity to turn a 65-acre parcel into an environmental learning center and organic community garden for the entire diverse community in the down county area, a truly natural green space that Montgomery County could be proud to leave future generations.
