Glen Echo lowers rent for post office
The Town of Glen Echo reduced the rent of its post office branch out of fear of losing it.
The town council recently accepted the post office's proposal of 15 percent reduction in rent, from $31,680 a year to $27,000 annually. Glen Echo Mayor Debbie Beers said the request came from the post office to save money.
"We went along with it mainly because we are desirous of keeping the post office in town," Beers said. "There been a post office in Gen Echo since town was incorporated."
The post office, which rents space in the town hall, will also pick up its portion of electric bill, said Town Clerk-Treasurer Cathie Polak.
"Glen Echo doesn't want to see their post office close," Polak said.
Beers said the town enjoys having its own ZIP code, 20812, and the post office is loved by residents because it is within walking of most homes.
The Glen Echo Post Office was not scheduled for closure or relocation, said Sharon Tennison communications coordinator with the United State Postal Service.
The Glen Echo Post Office serves 106 customers on routes, has 384 P.O. boxes and employs one postmaster and one clerk, Tennison said. The post office will continue its lease through 2011 before the reduction kicks in Jan 1, 2012, through the end of 2016, Beers said.
The decrease in revenue for the town will not be a significant issue, Beers said.
"At least the post office is still there," she said.
