Baysox fizzle vs. Phillies
Bowie drops two of three, including shutout loss on Sunday
Bowie outhit Reading 6-5 but couldn't muster any runs, while the Phllies scored in the first and second innings against Baysox starter Tim Bascom.
John Mariotti, Ryan Ouellette and Chad Thall combined to toss three innings of one-hit relief for Bowie after Bascom went six innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four with no walks.
Phillies' pitcher Johan Flande struck out seven, walked one and allowed only four hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Sergio Escalona and Michael Zagurski each threw 1 1/3 innings in relief.
Bowie had few chances against Flande. Shortstop Robert Valido singled with one out in the sixth, stole second base and moved to third on a ground out, but was left stranded when Daniel Figueroa grounded out to end the inning.
In the seventh, Flande surrendered a one-out single to Steve Torrealba and then a double to Ambiorix Concepcion. Escalona came on in relief and got Paco Figueroa to ground out, then hit Dave Krynzel with a pitch to load the bases. But Adam Donachie, who had two hits in the game, struck out to end the threat.
Bowie loaded the bases against Escalona again in the seventh, but with two outs Zagurski came on to shut the door on the potential rally by getting Concepcion to ground out.
In the ninth, Krynzel walked and moved to third on a single by Donachie. With two outs, Tucker drew a walk to load the bases, but the game ended when Zagurski struck out Daniel Figueroa.
The Baysox dropped to 55-46 and begin a four-game series against the Connecticut Defenders on Monday night 5 1/2 games behind first-place Akron in the Eastern League's Southern Division. Connecticut (58-43) is in first place in the Northern Division. Bowie will send left-hander Brian Matusz to the mound on Monday. The Baltimore Orioles' first-round draft pick in 2008, Matusz is 6-0 with a 1.88 ERA since joining the Baysox last month.
