Blue Jays win baseball title

The Fort Washington Blue Jays U-12 baseball team completed a perfect 16-0 season after winning the county Babe Ruth championship with victories against South Bowie, 12-2, and Marlboro, 9-6, in the title game.

Fort Washington led Marlboro (13-1-1), 9-3, heading in the last inning when third baseman Tariq Abubakar made an unassisted double play by catching a line drive and doubling up a runner attempting to steal home.

Carlton Suber and Abubakar scored five and four runs, respectively, for Fort Washington in the two games. Myles Nelson and Steffen Davis combined for 14 strikeouts in the mound.

Infielders Yves Cooper, Abubakar and Isaiah Knight all had strong games playing infield. Outfielders Nick Taylor, Jeff Edwards, and Wuanya Kelly were outstanding along with Ishmael Offutt. Darius Glenn, Isaiah Harris and Dennis Fortuna combined duties at catcher and threw out several runners.

Fort Washington outscored its opponents, 190-34, this season. The team is coached by Carlton Suber and assistants Angela Mittman and Douglas Berry.

New Wave sends 11to Junior Olympics

The New Wave Track Club sent more than 50 athletes to the USATF regional qualifier at Rock Hill, S.C., two weekends ago, and 11 members of the team qualified for the USATF Junior Olympics in Omaha, Neb., by recording top-three finishes at the regional. The Junior Olympics began Tuesday and run through Sunday.

In the Young Men’s division, Devon Smith qualified for the national meet in the 100 and 200 meters and also will compete with the 400 relay team. The relay squad also includes Kenard Harris, Jesse Mitchell, Ernest Cooper and alternate Jovan Edwards.

In the Midget Girls division, Jordan Davis qualified in the 1,500. London Freeland made it to the nationals in the 400 and 800. Davis and Freeland also are part of the 1,600 relay team along with Briona Shorter and Jimmica Yarbrough.

In the Midget Boys division, Paris Vaughan qualified in the 1,500 and Kordell Williams will compete in the outdoor pentathlon.

Many of the club’s competitors who qualified for the regional in South Carolina were new to track and field. Sharks fall short of WA

The Fort Washington Sharks dropped a 292-249 decision to undefeated West Arundel in the final regular season meet of the Prince-Mont Swim league on Saturday.

Ryan Bonomo (8-and-under) completed a perfect season for the Sharks in the boys’ breaststroke. David King was first in the backstroke and Brian Wynn was runner-up in the freestyle. Madison Tompkins won the 8-and-under girls’ breast.

Don Brazelton (9-10 boys) was a double winner in the butterfly and free. Alexander Plansky was third in the back and Jared Saunders was third in the breast. Akeyla Holley won the 9-10 girls’ fly. Kiara Leath was first in the breast and Gabby Stevenson was runner-up in the back.

In the 11-12 boys, Marcus Dennis was triple winner in the free, back and individual medley. Charis Kamon was third in the fly and back. Gaby Griffin was second in the 11-12 girls’ fly and free, while Ayana Bowman was second in the breast.

Dakota Hinely won the fly, free and back in the 13-14 boys’ events. Brandon Dennis won the breast. Walter Irving took second in the IM and Basem Magd was third in the breast. In the 13-14 girls’ races, Erin Dullahan was runner-up in the IM. Eva Gonzalez was a runner-up in the back and third in the IM. Becca Bonomo was runner-up in the breast, while Kimberly Scott took third the free.

Arthur Walton was first in the free in the aged boys’ division and runner-up in the fly and breast. Johnathan Brevard won the breast. Joey Patrizio and A.J. Gonzalez claimed second and third, respectively, in the IM. Nicholas Leighton was third in the fly and back. For the girls, Nicole Scott won the fly and breast and was second in the IM. Meghan Bonomo was third in the fly and IM and Katie True was third in the breast.

Brazelton, Dennis, Hinely, and Walton won the boys’ graduated relay.

Frontrunners send fourto nationals

Four members of the first-year Frontrunners Track Club of Bowie qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics starting Saturday in Detroit by notching top-four finishes at the Region 2B Championships.

Upper Marlboro resident Todd Sampson gave the Frontrunners two first-place finishes in the Boys Sub-Youth division and will return to the Junior Olympics after winning the triple jump (33 feet, 2 inches) and the 100-meter hurdles with a personal record of 15.08 seconds. He also took second in the 200 hurdles (28.52).

Joshua Wilkins of Bowie was the runner-up in the Sub-Youth 3,000 (11:06.89), earning his third trip to the Junior Olympics. He also ran a personal-best time of 4:49.72 in the 1,500 to take second place.

Capitol Heights resident Jaleah Nelson, in her first year as a track athlete, took fourth place and set a personal-best in the Bantam Girls 1,500 race walk (12:22.5).

Charles County resident Anthony Holton, a first-year triple jumper, qualified for the national meet in the Youth Boys triple jump with a fourth-place finish (33 feet, 6 inches).

Just missing trips to the nationals were Bowie resident Trinity Wilkins, Clinton resident Marcus Kane and Fort Washington resident Ian Florence, who all had fifth-place finishes. Wilkins set a personal best in the 800 (3:18.72). Kane went 14.60 in the 80 hurdles. Florence finished the 800 in 5:30.

Nhaikyia Smith, Dallas Blakney, JayLah Nelson, Illya Edwards, Leonard Bell, Marceles Kane also competed in the regional meet.

Registrations scheduled

The Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club is holding registration for flag football, tackle football, soccer and cheerleading from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Oxon Hill Staff Development Center, 7707 Livingston Road, behind Oxon Hill Elementary School.

The Allentown Boys and Girls Club is holding registration for its 2008-09 cheerleading season for ages 5 to 16. The registration fee is $120. The Fort Washington Area Recreation Council Boys and Girls Club is holding registration for boys and girls ages 5 to 14 for the 2008 fall soccer season.
