Maryland Starts take second place
The Upper Marlboro-based Maryland Stars U-10 baseball team took second place in the Fran Michal Tournament in Baltimore last week. After going 2-1 during pool play for seeding, the Stars entered bracket play with the No. 2 seed. The Stars beat Manchester, 13-3, in the semifinals, but lost the championship game, 10-9, to Lutherville-Timonium. The team includes Hunter Blackburn, Latreal Brame, Lloyd Bryan Jr., Jahan Caster, Kavi Caster, Trey Davis, Lance Lynch, Ryan Marcus, Kirk McLean, Anthony Robinson, Teman Washington, Jaydon Whitehead and coach Justin Washington.
Holy Family Knights set four records
The Holy Family Knights Track Club of Temple Hills set four meet records at the United Age Group Track Coaches Association meet in Philadelphia last weekend. Roy Melvin broke midget boys' division meet records in the 200 meters (25.15 seconds), 400 (57.22) and 800 (2 minutes, 20.37 seconds). Emarii Lopes broke the intermediate girls' 3,000 race walk record with a time of 24:54.
Jared Allen took third in the youth boys' 800. In the youth girls' division, Kennedy Holton won medals in the 200, 400, 800 and 3,200 relay. Kayla Tucker medaled in the 3,000, 1,500 and 1,600 relay. Bria Whitfield and Kandice Pettaway medaled in the 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay. Shavone Brown and Latasha Jeter also were part of the 3,200 relay team and Jeter medaled in the 3,000. Talaya Dyson medaled in the discus and javelin.
Eric Holton won medals in the 3,000, 1,500 and 800 in the midget boys' age group. Dallas Parran, Bakari Dyson, Robert Edwards and Bilal Dyson were part of the medal-winning 3,200 relay team. Parran also medaled in the javelin, and Bakari Dyson medaled in the 3,000. Maiya Caraway medaled in the midget girls' discus. Myles Boyd and Tyler Melvin medaled in the bantam boys' division.
Sharks beat Indian Head
The Fort Washington Sharks Swim Team finished its Prince-Mont Swim League regular season schedule with a 319-248 win against the Indian head Torpedoes on Saturday. In the process, the Sharks set three Fort Washington Pool records and Indian Head set one.
Fort Washington's Dakota Hinely, Brandon Dennis, Basem Magd and Arthur Walton broke the boys' medley relay record with a time of 2 minutes, 10.24 seconds. Indian Head's girls' medley relay of Amanda Caballero, Sydney Fuller, Hannah Hagadorn, and Jenna Pomponia retaliated by setting a new pool record of 2.25.63.
The other two new records came from Fort Washington's Akeyla Holley, who broke her own 11-12 girls' butterfly record that she had set two weeks ago, by finishing in 32.81. Holley then broke a 32-year-old record in the freestyle, finishing in 29.87.
Triple winners for the Sharks included David King, Jared Saunders and Marcus Dennis. D'Ante Jeffries and his sister Akilah Jeffires each won two events, as did Sean Griffin.
Magd, Hinely, Madison Tompkins, Nate Thomas, Joey Pagnella, Kiara Leath, Nick Patrizio and Marlena Fernandez also won races for Fort Washington.
The eight and under mixed relay of Akilah Jeffries, Kevin Masciola, Alexandra Tompkins, and Griffin came in first place. King, Saunders, Dennis, and Patrizio won the boys' graduated relay. Madison Tompkins, Holley, Gaby Griffin and Fernandez won the girls' graduated relay.
Fort Washington will travel to Indian Head for the Prince-Mont Division D championships on Saturday morning.
