Farm tour urges eating local produce
Gaithersburg's Fox Hollow Farm will join 12 other farms in Montgomery County Farm Tour and Harvest Sale on Saturday and Sunday.
Fresh produce, farm animals, hayrides and educational displays are only a few of the attractions of the tour, in its 20 year and sponsored by the county's Department of Economic Development Agricultural Services Division.
Participating farms are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. one or both days.
Fox Hollow Farm owners Vince and Stephanie Scuderi are Pennsylvania Dutch and have been farming for more than 30 years. The farm is the only one on the tour to feature goats. The farm sells goat meat, cheese and milk, Stephanie said.
"When most people think of goat meat, they sort of cringe," she said. "But it's just like eating a good piece of beef."
Just for the tour, the farm will be selling grilled goat kabobs and Pennsylvania Dutch roasted corn, as well as other fresh vegetables, meat and cheese. A guest speaker will talk about goats and a husband and wife duo will play Scottish music.
The farm tour is associated with the state's 2009 Buy Local Challenge. People are encouraged to eat at least one item from a local farm each day during the last week in July. Doing so stimulates the economy and allows you to know the exact source of the food you eat, Kristin Fisher, agriculture program specialist for the county's Agricultural Services Division, said.
