Maryland State Police have released the name of the man found shot dead in a car that crashed in Frederick Sunday morning.

Police say Maurice J. Williams, 27, of Ladd Court, Frederick, was found behind the wheel of a silver Mercury Marquis with a gunshot wound to the chest at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to Greg Shipley, spokesman for State Police, investigators originally thought Williams was from Montgomery County, but he recently moved to Frederick to live with his fiancé and their two children. Court records listed his address as Hale Place, Silver Spring, in December 2006.

Troopers responded to the intersection of Hanover Drive and Ballenger Creek Drive to investigate a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning. The vehicle Williams was driving, which belongs to his fiancé, jumped the curb before coming to a rest.

Found suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest, Williams was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Washington County Hospital, where he later died.

Shipley said an autopsy by the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Baltimore confirmed the manner of death as a homicide and the cause as a gunshot wound to the chest.

He said investigators from State Police and from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the murder. There have been no arrests or charges in connection with Williams' death at this time.

Shipley said two individuals interviewed by the Sheriff's Office ‘‘were found not to be involved” in the crime.

He said investigators know that Williams and his fiancé attended a party on Kelly Court, a short distance away from where Williams was discovered. Williams left the party unexpectedly, he said, and was soon found in the car fatally wounded.

‘‘We are looking at several hundred yards away as we look to try and determine what happened between the party [and the discovery of Williams],” he said.

Investigators have no theory as to when Williams was shot or a motive at this time, Shipley said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Frederick barracks of the Maryland State Police at 301-600-4151.
