FIRST TEAM

Coach of the Year

Rob Burke

Damascus, 7th year

Led girls team to rare county and regional titles, as well as several invitational wins. Boys team also won two invitationals.

Athlete of the Year

Veronica Salcido (Wootton, Fr.)

Youth has been served. Named first­team in the 500, 800 and ¹,600 meters after dominating those events. Set new county records in the 500 (¹:¹8.6) and 800 (2:¹9.5). Won a state title in the ¹,600.

Phobay Kutu­Akoi

Kennedy Sr. 55, 300 meters

Won county titles, finished second at states in both events.

Allison King

Churchill Sr. 3,200 meters

Regional champ (¹¹:25.8) also had best finish of any county athlete at states (¹¹:36.¹).

Erika Zoller

Damascus Sr. High hurdles

Dominated event with county, regional titles.

Kennedy 4x200 relay

County's fastest foursome set new record with first­place finish at county meet (¹:46.2).

Kennedy 4x400 relay

(Asia Nettles, Jr.; Michele Miller, So.; Ashlee Payne, So.; Phobay Kutu­Akoi, Sr.)

Youth­laden group swept county, regional, state titles while setting new county record (4:08.2).

Churchill 4x800 relay (Carissa Youker, So.; Betsey Morser, So.; Allison King, Sr.; Lindsey Gravitz, Sr.)

Won county, regional titles with ease. Best run, though, was at state meet: 9:44.3, good for third place.

Emma Hanson

Damascus Jr. High jump

Tall junior used height to her advantage by sweeping county, regional, state titles. Saved best for last: Won state crown at 5­4.

Lili Afkhami

Quince Orchard Sr. Shot put

Won county crown with season­best throw of 33­¹ ¹⁄2. Took regional gold at 30­5 3⁄4. Also had best county throw at states: 3¹­9 3⁄4.
