Piotr Gajewski, music director and conductor of the National Philharmonic, plans to announce his candidacy for Rockville City Council at Giuseppi’s Pizza Plus on Sunday.

‘‘I’m running to promote effective, efficient government and I’m a public servant at heart,” he said in an interview.

Gajewski, 48, lives in King Farm and has served on various committees, mostly involving cultural arts in the county and Gaithersburg.

In addition to his music degrees, Gajewski also has a law degree and is a member of the Maryland Bar.

Pizza and sodas will be served at the announcement, scheduled for 2 p.m.

Marcucciomakes it official

Minutes after the Town Square dedication ceremony ended on Tuesday, Rockville City Councilwoman Phyllis R. Marcuccio kicked off her re-election campaign in front of the Red Brick Courthouse in downtown Rockville.

The one-term councilwoman’s speech was brief and included references to her successful advocacy for a pair of one-cent cuts in the real property tax rate over the last two years.

She called for a science center for the city’s youth and development that preserves the small town ‘‘flavor” of Rockville.

After flirting publicly with the idea of running for mayor, Marcuccio announced she would seek re-election to the council in May.
