Down the stretch comes Damascus Post 171
A roundup of the week in summer baseball
With nine wins in its last 10 games through the weekend one a forfeit by St. Mary's Post 54 Damascus Post 171 has significantly enhanced its playoff standing, especially with weekend losses by Laurel Post 60 (13-8) and Cissel Saxon Post 41 (12-7).
At the beginning of the week, Post 171 (13-7) was battling to hold the fourth and final playoff spot; by the end, it trailed only leader Sandy Spring Post 68 (15-6). Post 295 (13-10), the host of the Maryland State American Legion Tournament, is in danger of not reaching the Montgomery Division tournament, which begins next week.
Post 41, recently in the top three, has a tough stretch to conclude the season with its playoff future in doubt. The squad still has games with Damascus and Sandy Spring.
- Rockville High rising senior Charles Brown was named to the Maryland Futures squad during the MSABC Classic this past May. The Futures squad is comprised of the state's best juniors.
Unlike last year's inaugural team, Brown and his fellow honorees will not participate in the Midwest Baseball Classic, "due to many players having commitments to other teams and due to financial concerns," Northwest coach Matt Noble said.
Brown batted .373 with seven doubles, two triples and one home run a grand slam with 24 runs batted in last spring.
- The Gaithersburg Post 295 team captured the East Division of the Potomac Junior American Legion League with a 17-8-1 record and will compete in the National Amateur Baseball Federation 17-and-under World Series in Tennessee next week.
Post 295 will compete in the high school division, which begins play July 22. A total of three teams will play in the tournament from the Potomac Junior American Legion league.
- Good Counsel athletic director Patrick Bates will accept résumés for the vacant varsity baseball position through July 23. He hopes to fill the position by mid-August. For those interested, e-mail Bates at bates@olgchs.org or call at 240-283-3211.
- Talk about tough luck. Gaithersburg Post 295 pitcher Dominique Vattuone, the 2009 Gazette Player of the Year, limited Laurel Post 60 to three hits in a complete-game effort July 6, but lost, 1-0.
- Gaithersburg Post 104 right fielder Matt Monroe made a spectacular catch to rob Damascus Post 171's Anthony Papio of extra bases in the sixth inning of Tuesday's 11-7 loss, grabbing the ball as he ran face first into the right center field fence. After receiving some attention from his coaches, Monroe remained in the game.
